Tafsir (Explanation):
How immense and abundant are the blessings of Allah, the Most High! He is the One whose grace knows no bounds and whose generosity surpasses all expectations. In this verse, Allah addresses His beloved Messenger ﷺ with words of immense comfort and reassurance.
The disbelievers of Makkah, in their arrogance and ignorance, had made a strange and taunting proposal to the Prophet ﷺ. They suggested that if he truly were a prophet, he should transform the rugged mountains of Makkah into golden hills, or cause rivers to flow through the barren valleys, or build magnificent palaces for himself. They thought that such worldly displays would prove his prophethood — not realizing that the true proof lies in the message itself, not in material wonders.
In response, Allah — glorified and exalted — tells His Messenger: "Blessed is He who, if He willed, could give you something better than what they propose." Then He describes that better gift: gardens beneath which rivers flow, and magnificent palaces. This means that Allah could easily grant the Prophet ﷺ all the worldly luxuries the disbelievers demanded — and even more. He could make the earth bloom with verdant gardens, flowing streams, and towering castles. Nothing is impossible for Him; He merely says "Be" and it is.
Yet, there is profound wisdom here. Allah did not grant these things to His Prophet ﷺ at that time, not because He was unable, but because He wanted to elevate the Prophet's rank in the Hereafter, where the true and everlasting rewards await. The Prophet ﷺ was being prepared for a mission far greater than worldly kingship — the mission of guiding humanity to eternal salvation. His reward was not to be confined to the fleeting pleasures of this world, but to be the highest station in Paradise, the Maqaam al-Mahmood (the Praiseworthy Station).
This verse carries a beautiful lesson for every believer: when people mock you or demand worldly proofs of your faith, remember that Allah's power is limitless. He can grant you far better than what they imagine. But His wisdom may choose to delay or withhold certain worldly blessings because He has something far more precious reserved for you — both in this life (in the form of contentment, peace, and spiritual success) and in the eternal life to come.
So, dear believer, never feel disheartened by the taunts of those who measure success by material standards. Your Lord is the Most Generous. If He wills, He can open doors of provision and comfort beyond your imagination. And if He withholds, it is only to give you something greater. Trust His wisdom, for He knows what is best for you, and His blessings are truly boundless.
