Key Words and Their Meanings:

  • Al-Madinah: The city (here, the city of Memphis in Egypt, the capital of Pharaoh's kingdom).
  • Ala heen ghaflah: At a time of inattention or when the people were heedless/occupied (often explained as the time of rest or during a festival when people were distracted).
  • Shee'atihi: His party or followers — meaning the man was from the Children of Israel, the people of Moses.
  • Aduwwihi: His enemy — meaning the man was from the Copts, the people of Pharaoh.
  • Fawakazahu: He struck him with his fist (a closed-hand blow).
  • Faqada 'alayhi: He finished him off — meaning the blow caused his death.
  • Nazgh: The whispering/incitement of Satan that stirs anger and leads to wrongdoing.

The Interpretation:

Moses (peace be upon him) entered the city quietly, unnoticed, at a time when its inhabitants were distracted and unaware — a moment of collective heedlessness. As he walked through, he came upon two men locked in a violent struggle. One was from his own people, the Children of Israel, and the other was from the Copts, the people of Pharaoh — the sworn enemies of Moses and his community. The Israelite man, recognizing Moses as a figure of strength and kinship, cried out to him for help against his Copt adversary.

Moses, moved by a sense of duty toward his brother, intervened. He struck the Copt with a single powerful blow of his fist — not intending to kill him, but only to defend the oppressed and stop the aggression. Yet the force of the blow was such that the man fell dead. This was not a premeditated act; it was an unintended consequence of a moment of intense emotion and physical strength that Moses had been given.

Immediately, Moses was overtaken by regret and sorrow. He realized that his anger had been stirred, and that this tragic outcome was a result of Satan's incitement — the whisper that fuels rage and leads a person beyond their intended limits. He declared: "This is from the work of Satan. Indeed, he is a manifest enemy who leads people astray." Moses acknowledged that the enemy of mankind, Satan, had exploited his emotions, and that this was a lesson in the danger of unchecked anger and the cunning of the devil.

This event took place before Moses was granted prophethood. It was part of his preparation — a moment of human weakness and repentance that would shape his character and deepen his reliance on Allah. It teaches us that even the most righteous among Allah's chosen servants can stumble, but what distinguishes them is their immediate awareness, their sincere remorse, and their turning back to Allah in humility.

A Call to Reflection:

Dear reader, see how the Qur'an presents the prophets as real human beings — not flawless angels, but men who struggled, erred, and repented. This is a profound mercy from Allah: if Moses, a man of immense strength and noble character, could be overtaken by a moment of anger, then how much more should we guard our own hearts and tongues? The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) taught us: "The strong man is not the one who can wrestle, but the one who controls himself at the moment of anger."

Let this verse be a reminder that Satan is ever-watchful, waiting for the right moment to inflame our emotions and lead us to actions we will regret. But Allah, in His infinite mercy, opens the door of repentance wide. When you slip, do not despair — acknowledge your mistake, seek forgiveness, and resolve to be better. For Allah loves those who turn back to Him, and He turns their missteps into lessons that elevate them. The path of faith is not a path of perfection, but a path of sincere striving and constant return to the Most Merciful.

📜 Verse 13-17 — Al-Qasas

So We restored him to his mother that she might be content and not grieve and that she would know that the promise of Allah is true. But most of the people do not know.
And when he attained his full strength and was [mentally] mature, We bestowed upon him judgement and knowledge. And thus do We reward the doers of good.

And the one from his faction called for help to him against the one from his enemy, so Moses struck him and [unintentionally] killed him. [Moses] said, "This is from the work of Satan.
He said, "My Lord, indeed I have wronged myself, so forgive me," and He forgave him. Indeed, He is the Forgiving, the Merciful.
He said, "My Lord, for the favor You bestowed upon me, I will never be an assistant to the criminals."
