Explanation of the Verse:
In this profound moment, Prophet Musa (Moses, peace be upon him) found himself in a state of deep regret and humility. He had unintentionally caused the death of a Coptic man while defending one of his own people from oppression. Though it was not premeditated murder, Musa immediately recognized the gravity of his action and turned to his Lord in sincere repentance.
He cried out: *"My Lord, indeed I have wronged myself"* — acknowledging his human fallibility and taking full responsibility for his mistake without making excuses. He did not blame circumstances or others; he simply owned his error before his Creator. Then he pleaded: *"so forgive me"* — a humble request for divine pardon, showing that true repentance involves both admitting the sin and seeking Allah's mercy.
Allah, in His infinite kindness, responded immediately: *"So He forgave him."* This swift forgiveness demonstrates how beloved sincere repentance is to Allah. The verse concludes with a beautiful affirmation of Allah's attributes: *"Indeed, He is the Oft-Forgiving, the Most Merciful."* This is not just a statement about Musa's situation but a universal promise — Allah's forgiveness and mercy are boundless for all who turn to Him with genuine hearts.
A Da'wah Reflection:
This verse carries a timeless lesson for every believer. Look at the beauty of this interaction: a great prophet of Allah, a man chosen to carry the divine message, still humbled himself before his Lord, admitting his shortcoming without hesitation. If even Musa — who spoke directly to Allah — needed to seek forgiveness, how much more do we, with our many flaws and mistakes, need to turn to our Creator?
The door of repentance is always open. No matter how great your sins may seem, Allah's mercy is greater. He does not grow tired of forgiving; He rejoices when His servant returns to Him. The moment you sincerely say, *"My Lord, I have wronged myself, so forgive me,"* know that Allah is already rushing to meet you with His pardon and compassion.
Do not let Shaytan deceive you into despair. The One who forgave Musa after such a serious incident is the same Lord who awaits your return today. Call upon Him with a humble heart, and you will find that He is indeed the Oft-Forgiving, the Most Merciful — a promise He never breaks.
