  • السَّرَّاءِ — times of ease, prosperity, and comfort.
  • الضَّرَّاءِ — times of hardship, adversity, and difficulty.

  • الْمُحْسِنِينَ — those who excel in doing good, who perfect their deeds and character.

Tafsir (Explanation):

Allah describes the qualities of the righteous — those who have earned His love and His Paradise — and He begins with the virtue of generosity. They are the ones who spend their wealth in the cause of Allah and for the benefit of others, not only when times are easy and their hearts are content, but also when they face hardship, scarcity, and personal difficulty. Their giving is not conditional upon their own comfort; rather, it flows from a heart that trusts Allah and seeks His pleasure in every circumstance. Whether they are prosperous or struggling, they do not withhold what they have, knowing that wealth is but a trust from Allah.

Then Allah mentions another noble trait: they are those who suppress their anger. When they are provoked, wronged, or faced with injustice, they do not let rage control them. They hold back the fire of fury that rises within them, choosing patience and self-restraint over outburst and revenge. This is a sign of true strength, for the Prophet ﷺ said: "The strong one is not the one who overcomes people by his strength, but the one who controls himself when in anger."

And beyond merely suppressing their anger, they go a step further: they pardon people — even those who have wronged them. They do not merely restrain themselves from retaliation; they forgive wholeheartedly, releasing the offender from blame and leaving the matter to Allah. This is the pinnacle of moral excellence, for forgiveness is not a sign of weakness but of profound inner strength and closeness to Allah.

Allah concludes this verse by saying: "And Allah loves the doers of good." This is the ultimate reward — the love of the Creator. Those who combine generosity, self-control, and forgiveness are the true *muḥsinūn* — those who perfect their character and their worship. And when Allah loves a servant, He guides them, protects them, and grants them success in this life and the next.

Dear reader, reflect on these beautiful qualities. They are not impossible ideals; they are attainable through sincere effort and reliance on Allah. Every time you give despite your own need, every time you swallow your anger for the sake of Allah, every time you forgive someone who has hurt you — you are drawing closer to the love of your Lord. And what could be greater than being loved by the One who created you? Strive to be among the *muḥsinūn*, and let this verse be your daily reminder that Paradise is not only for those who pray and fast, but for those who beautify their hearts and their dealings with others.

And obey Allah and the Messenger that you may obtain mercy.
And hasten to forgiveness from your Lord and a garden as wide as the heavens and earth, prepared for the righteous
Who spend [in the cause of Allah] during ease and hardship and who restrain anger and who pardon the people - and Allah loves the doers of good;
And those who, when they commit an immorality or wrong themselves [by transgression], remember Allah and seek forgiveness for their sins - and who can forgive sins except Allah? - and [who] do not persist in what they have done while they know.
Those - their reward is forgiveness from their Lord and gardens beneath which rivers flow [in Paradise], wherein they will abide eternally; and excellent is the reward of the [righteous] workers.
