Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Fāḥishah (فاحشة): A grave, indecent sin that is clearly repugnant and exceeds the limits set by Allah.
  • Ẓalamū anfusahum (ظلموا أنفسهم): Wronged themselves by committing sins lesser than the major indecencies.
  • Iṣrār (إصرار): Persisting or remaining steadfast upon a sin without repentance.
  • Yastaighfirū (يستغفرون): Seeking forgiveness from Allah with sincere repentance and a resolved commitment not to return to the sin.

Tafsir (Explanation):

This verse paints a beautiful portrait of the true believers—those who, despite their human weakness and occasional slips into sin, possess a living, breathing consciousness of Allah. When they commit a grave sin or fall into lesser transgressions that harm their own souls, they do not turn away in despair or arrogance. Instead, they remember Allah—His promise of mercy and His warning of punishment—and this remembrance stirs their hearts to immediate repentance. They turn to their Lord, seeking His forgiveness with humility and sincerity, fully convinced that no one in the heavens or the earth can erase sins except Allah alone. This conviction is not merely intellectual; it is the very fuel that drives their repentance.

Crucially, these believers do not persist in their wrongdoing. They do not treat sin as a habit or a lifestyle. Rather, they stop, reflect, and return to Allah while fully aware that what they did was wrong and that Allah’s mercy encompasses all sins for those who sincerely repent. Their knowledge is not passive—it transforms into action: they abandon the sin, seek forgiveness, and resolve to do better. This is the hallmark of faith: a heart that never grows comfortable with disobedience and always finds its way back to its Creator.

A Da'wah Reflection:

Dear reader, this verse is a lifeline of hope for every soul that has stumbled. It tells you that no matter how heavy your sins may feel, the door of Allah’s forgiveness is wide open. The Shaytan wants you to despair after sin, whispering that you have gone too far. But Allah, in His infinite mercy, tells you otherwise: the believer’s response to sin is not despair—it is remembrance, repentance, and a fresh start. Imagine the joy of a child who errs but runs back to a loving parent, knowing they will be embraced. That is your relationship with Allah when you seek His forgiveness. Do not let shame keep you from Him. He is Al-Ghafūr (The Oft-Forgiving), Al-Raḥīm (The Most Merciful). The moment you turn to Him with a sincere heart, He turns to you with even greater mercy. So, if you have sinned, do not delay—remember Allah, seek His forgiveness, and never look back. This is the path of the righteous, and it is open to you right now.

📜 Verse 133-137 — Aal-Imran

And hasten to forgiveness from your Lord and a garden as wide as the heavens and earth, prepared for the righteous
Who spend [in the cause of Allah] during ease and hardship and who restrain anger and who pardon the people - and Allah loves the doers of good;
And those who, when they commit an immorality or wrong themselves [by transgression], remember Allah and seek forgiveness for their sins - and who can forgive sins except Allah? - and [who] do not persist in what they have done while they know.
Those - their reward is forgiveness from their Lord and gardens beneath which rivers flow [in Paradise], wherein they will abide eternally; and excellent is the reward of the [righteous] workers.
Similar situations [as yours] have passed on before you, so proceed throughout the earth and observe how was the end of those who denied.
