Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Qutiloo – Those who were killed or martyred.
- Fi Sabeelillah – In the path of Allah, meaning striving in His cause through jihad and defending the truth.
- Amwaatan – Dead, lifeless, devoid of sensation.
- Ahyaa'un – Alive, in a special state of life.
- Yurzaqoon – They are provided with sustenance and blessings.
Tafsir (Explanation):
Do not think, O Prophet, that those who were killed in the cause of Allah are truly dead, as the common perception of death suggests—an end to all feeling and existence. Rather, they are alive in a unique and honored state, in the presence of their Lord, enjoying His nearness and generosity. This life is not like the worldly life we know; it is a life of the barzakh (the intermediate realm), where they are granted provisions of delight and bliss from Paradise that no eye has seen, no ear has heard, and no human heart can imagine.
This verse was revealed concerning the martyrs of Badr, and it is also said it refers to the martyrs of Uhud, including Hamzah (may Allah be pleased with him) and his companions. Their souls are not lost or extinguished; rather, they are alive with their Lord, being honored and sustained. They rejoice in the favors Allah has bestowed upon them, and they are given glad tidings of even greater blessings to come.
A Da'wah Reflection:
What a profound and comforting truth this is for every believer! The martyrdom in the path of Allah is not a loss or an end—it is a transition to a higher, everlasting life of honor. This should fill the hearts of Muslims with courage, hope, and love for Allah. When you strive for the sake of truth and justice, even if you sacrifice your life, you are not perishing; you are ascending to a station of eternal bliss in the company of your Lord. This is the ultimate victory that no worldly power can grant or take away.
So, dear believer, let this verse strengthen your resolve. Do not fear death in the cause of righteousness, for the martyrs are alive and well-provided for. And if you are not called to martyrdom, then live your life in obedience to Allah, striving in His path with your wealth, words, and deeds. For the One who honors His martyrs with such a magnificent reward is the same Lord who watches over you and will never let your sincere efforts go to waste. Embrace this truth with certainty, and let it transform your heart into one that yearns for Allah's pleasure above all else.
