Explanation of the Verse:
This verse exposes the hypocrites who stayed behind from the Battle of Uhud and did not join the believers in their struggle against the polytheists. After the battle, when some Muslims were martyred, these hypocrites said to their relatives who had gone out to fight: "If they had obeyed us and stayed behind as we did, they would not have been killed." They claimed that their own survival was due to their cleverness in avoiding the fight, and they used this as proof that their advice was wiser than the Prophet's command to go out to battle.
Allah, the Exalted, commands His Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) to respond to their false claim with a decisive rebuttal: "Say: Then repel death from yourselves, if you are truthful." In other words, if you truly believe that your staying behind saved you from death, and that your strategy can protect you from fate, then use your cunning and your plans to push death away when it comes to you. But you cannot, for death is inevitable and comes to every soul at its appointed time, whether one is in battle or sitting at home. No precaution, no wisdom, and no avoidance can delay or hasten what Allah has decreed.
This verse teaches us a profound lesson: that life and death are entirely in the Hands of Allah alone. Running away from jihad or from any trial does not extend one's life, nor does facing it shorten it. The believer's duty is to obey Allah and His Messenger, to strive in the path of righteousness, and to trust in Allah's decree with complete submission. The hypocrites, by contrast, thought that their worldly cunning could outsmart the divine will—but they were utterly mistaken.
A Da'wah Reflection:
Dear reader, reflect on the beauty of this Qur'anic response. It does not merely refute the hypocrites' argument—it challenges them to prove their claim. It invites every human being to realize that no matter how much we plan, scheme, or protect ourselves, our ultimate fate rests with Allah. This should not make us reckless, but it should make us courageous in doing what is right, even when it involves risk. The greatest victory is not merely staying alive; it is living a life of obedience, honor, and purpose in the sight of Allah. When you obey Allah and His Messenger, you are on the path of true success, whether you live to see the fruits of your efforts in this world or you meet your Lord as a martyr—for the martyr is alive with His Lord, provided for, and honored beyond measure. So let this verse strengthen your resolve: do not let fear of death prevent you from doing what is right, and do not let your own opinions override the commands of Allah. Trust in Allah, for He is the Best of Planners, and He never abandons those who sincerely strive for His sake.
