Translation — Tafsir
Key Words and Their Meanings:
- "Haajjooka" (حاجّوك): They argued or disputed with you in a contentious manner, seeking to defeat your message through debate.
- "Aslamtu wajhiya lillah" (أَسْلَمْتُ وَجْهِيَ لِلَّهِ): I have submitted my whole being, sincerely and completely, to Allah alone — surrendering my face, my will, and my actions to Him.
- "Alladheena ootoo al-kitab" (الَّذِينَ أُوتُوا الْكِتَابَ): Those who were given the Scripture — i.e., the Jews and Christians.
- "Al-ummiyyeen" (الْأُمِّيِّينَ): The unlettered ones — referring to the Arab polytheists who had no revealed scripture.
- "A-Aslamtum" (أَأَسْلَمْتُمْ): A question that carries the force of a command — meaning: "Submit!" or "Will you not submit?"
- "Al-balagh" (الْبَلَاغُ): The delivery of the message — conveying the truth clearly without being responsible for people's acceptance or rejection.
- "Baseerun bil-ibad" (بَصِيرٌ بِالْعِبَادِ): All-Seeing of His servants — nothing about their hearts, intentions, or deeds is hidden from Him.
The Tafsir (Explanation):
O beloved Messenger, if the People of the Book — the Jews and Christians — argue with you about the truth of Islam after the evidence has been made clear to them, do not enter into endless and futile disputes. Instead, respond with a statement of certainty and sincerity: "I have submitted my entire being to Allah alone" — meaning, I have purified my worship, my obedience, and my devotion exclusively for Him, and I have surrendered my whole self to His command. And say: "And so have those who follow me" — for the believers who truly follow you have done the same; they have turned their faces and hearts to Allah with complete submission.
Then, address both groups — the People of the Book and the unlettered Arab polytheists — and call them with a question that is actually a gentle yet firm command: "Have you submitted?" In other words: Surrender yourselves to Allah, embrace His religion, and follow the truth that has come to you. This is not merely an inquiry; it is an invitation and a challenge to make a choice.
If they submit to Allah sincerely and follow the message you have brought, then they have indeed found the right path — they have left the darkness of misguidance and entered the light of guidance. But if they turn away and reject the call, then know that your duty is only to deliver the message clearly. You are not responsible for their hearts, nor can you force them to believe. Guidance is in the Hands of Allah alone.
And Allah is All-Seeing of His servants. He knows who believes with sincerity and who turns away in arrogance. Nothing is hidden from Him — not the secrets of their hearts, nor the deeds they do in private or in public. He will reward each soul according to what it has earned, with perfect justice and wisdom.
A Call to Reflection and Action:
This verse carries a profound lesson for every believer. It teaches us that our role is not to force people into faith, but to present the truth with clarity, wisdom, and sincerity. The Prophet ﷺ was commanded to declare his submission openly, to invite others with confidence, and then to leave the results to Allah. This is the beautiful balance of Islam: we strive, we call, we explain — but we never despair, and we never take on a burden that was never ours to carry.
Dear reader, the door of submission is open to you right now. Just as the Prophet ﷺ said, "I have submitted my face to Allah," you too can utter these words with your heart and tongue, and enter into the peace that comes from surrendering to your Creator. Islam is not a religion of compulsion — it is a religion of conviction, mercy, and clarity. The One who sees all of His servants is watching your journey, and He knows the sincerity within your heart. Do not delay your return to Him, for He is the Most Merciful, the Most Loving, and He accepts all who turn to Him in submission.
