Key Words and Their Meanings:
- Ad-Deen (الدين): The religion, creed, or way of life that is accepted and judged by Allah.
- Al-Islam (الإسلام): Complete submission, surrender, and obedience to Allah alone, with sincerity and devotion.
- Baghyan (بغيًا): Out of transgression, envy, and wrongful desire for leadership or worldly gain.
- Ayaat Allah (آيات الله): The signs of Allah — both the revealed scriptures and the universal signs in creation that point to His Oneness and Power.
- Saree' ul-Hisab (سريع الحساب): Swift in reckoning — meaning Allah will settle accounts with absolute speed and perfect justice.
The Explanation of the Verse:
Allah, the Most High, declares a fundamental and eternal truth: the only religion that is truly accepted in His sight is Islam — that is, the willing and complete submission of one's heart, tongue, and limbs to Allah alone, and the sincere following of His messengers. This has been the essence of the message of every prophet from Adam to Noah, Abraham, Moses, Jesus, and finally Muhammad (peace be upon him). Islam is not a new religion, but the original and final call to worship the One God without partners, to obey His commands, and to surrender to His will with love and trust.
After clarifying this truth, Allah addresses the People of the Book — the Jews and the Christians — and points out that their differences and divisions did not arise from ignorance or lack of guidance. On the contrary, they had received clear knowledge through their prophets and scriptures. Yet, it was only after this knowledge came to them that they fell into dispute and conflict — not out of sincere seeking of truth, but out of transgression, envy, and the desire for power and worldly gains. They knew the truth about the final Messenger, Muhammad (peace be upon him), as their own scriptures described him, but they turned away out of pride and jealousy.
Then the verse concludes with a powerful and serious warning: whoever rejects the signs of Allah — whether the revealed verses of the Qur'an or the undeniable signs in creation that point to His Oneness — should know that Allah is swift in reckoning. His account is precise, His justice is perfect, and His punishment is certain. No one who denies His signs will escape, and no delay in this world should make anyone feel secure.
A Call to Reflection and Action:
Dear reader, this verse is a gentle yet firm invitation to examine your heart and your relationship with your Creator. The path of Islam is not complicated — it is the natural state upon which Allah created every human being: to know Him, to love Him, and to submit to Him alone. It is the religion of peace — peace with Allah, peace within yourself, and peace with all of creation.
If you are a Muslim, this verse reminds you of the immense blessing of being guided to the truth. Hold onto it firmly, and let your submission be sincere and complete. If you are from the People of the Book, this verse lovingly calls you to look beyond the divisions of history and return to the pure message of your own prophets — a message that ultimately points to the final truth brought by Muhammad (peace be upon him). And if you are seeking the truth, know that your fitrah (natural disposition) already recognizes it. Do not let pride, envy, or worldly desires stand between you and the peace that comes from surrendering to Allah.
Allah's reckoning is swift, but His mercy is even greater. Turn to Him today, before the appointed time arrives, and you will find Him welcoming, forgiving, and loving.
