Translation — Tafsir
Key Words and Meanings:
- Khalā'if (خَلَائِفَ): Successors, one after another; those who inherit and inhabit the earth across generations.
- Maqtan (مَقْتًا): Intense abhorrence, severe displeasure, and indignation from Allah.
- Khusāran (خَسَارًا): Loss, ruin, and utter deprivation of good.
Explanation of the Verse:
Allah, the Most High, declares that He alone is the One who has made you — O humanity — successors upon the earth, with each generation following the one before it, inheriting the land and its resources. This succession is not a mere accident; it is a divine arrangement, a test of how you will act with what you have been given. He placed you in this position of stewardship to see who among you will be grateful and obedient, and who will turn away in ingratitude.
Then Allah clarifies the consequence of disbelief: "Whoever disbelieves, upon him is his disbelief." This means that the harm, burden, and punishment of disbelief fall entirely upon the disbeliever himself. His disbelief does not harm Allah in the least — Allah is utterly self-sufficient and free of all need. The disbeliever only harms his own soul, sealing his own fate.
Allah then reveals a profound truth: disbelief only increases the disbeliever in Allah's sight as an object of intense wrath and abhorrence. Every act of denial, every rejection of truth, adds to the divine displeasure against them. It is a downward spiral — the more they persist in disbelief, the more they accumulate Allah's anger.
Furthermore, their disbelief only increases them in loss. They lose the reward of Paradise that was prepared for them, they lose their chance at eternal bliss, they lose their souls, and they lose every opportunity for salvation. Each day they remain in disbelief, their losses compound, and their ultimate ruin becomes more certain.
A Call to Reflection:
Dear reader, contemplate this magnificent truth: Allah has honored you by making you His vicegerents on earth. He has given you life, resources, intellect, and the freedom to choose. This is not a game — it is a profound responsibility. The same earth that you walk upon was inhabited by nations before you, and they have all passed away, leaving behind only their deeds.
Do not let this precious opportunity slip away. Every breath you take is a chance to turn back to your Lord, to embrace His mercy, and to secure your place in His eternal Paradise. The door of repentance is open, and Allah's mercy is vast. He does not need your faith — you are the one who needs His mercy and His reward.
So seize this moment. Be among those who use their time on earth wisely, who worship their Creator, and who look forward to His pleasure rather than His wrath. For on that Day, when you stand before Him, you will realize that the only true success is in having believed, and the only true loss is in having denied. Choose now, before it is too late, and let your life on this earth be a journey toward eternal happiness, not a path toward everlasting regret.
