Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Aghlāl (أغلال): Iron chains or collars that bind the neck and hands together.
- Adhqān (أذقان): The chins; the lower part of the face where the jawbones meet.
- Muqmaḥūn (مقمحون): Those whose heads are raised upward, forced to look up because their hands are chained to their necks, unable to lower their heads.
Explanation of the Verse:
Allah describes the state of those who stubbornly rejected the truth after it was presented to them clearly, and who persisted in their disbelief with arrogance and defiance. He draws a powerful and vivid image: it is as if iron collars have been placed around their necks, binding their hands together with their necks up to their chins. This forces their heads to remain raised toward the sky, unable to bow down or lower their gaze. In this state, they are completely restrained—unable to see the truth, unable to incline toward guidance, and unable to submit to their Lord.
This is a profound metaphor for the spiritual reality of the disbelievers who closed their hearts and minds to the message of Islam. Just as a person physically chained in this manner cannot move freely or look down, these individuals are spiritually shackled—incapable of humbling themselves before Allah, incapable of accepting the truth, and incapable of turning toward righteousness. Their pride and stubbornness have become like iron chains around their souls, preventing them from the very humility that faith requires.
A Da'wah Reflection:
How merciful is Allah to have sent us the Qur'an as a means to break these chains! The moment a person humbles their heart before their Creator, the shackles of arrogance and ignorance fall away. The Qur'an invites you to lower your head in submission to Allah—not in humiliation, but in the most dignified act a human being can perform: prostration before the One who created you. Do not let pride, which is the very chain described in this verse, prevent you from experiencing the sweetness of faith. The door of repentance is open, and Allah's mercy is vast. Break free from these spiritual chains today by turning to Him with a sincere heart, and you will find a freedom that no earthly power can grant or take away.
