Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Lūṭ (لُوطًا): Prophet Lot, peace be upon him, the nephew of Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham), peace be upon him.
  • Min al-Mursalīn (لَمِنَ الْمُرْسَلِينَ): Among the messengers sent by Allah to guide their peoples.

Explanation of the Verse:

Allah, the Exalted, affirms here that Prophet Lot, peace be upon him, was indeed one of His chosen messengers. He was sent to a people who had sunk into grave moral corruption—practices that were unprecedented in human history. Despite their wickedness, Lot called them to the worship of Allah alone, to purity, and to righteousness. He warned them of the consequences of their sins, but they rejected him and persisted in their transgression.

In this brief yet powerful statement, Allah establishes the honor and rank of Lot among the noble prophets. He was not merely a righteous man or a reformer, but a divinely appointed messenger with a mission of mercy and guidance to his people. His story, which follows in the subsequent verses, demonstrates the fate of those who defy Allah’s messengers and the ultimate victory of truth over falsehood.

Reflection and Da‘wah:

This verse reminds us of the profound mercy of Allah, who never leaves humanity without guidance. He sent messengers to every nation, each equipped with the message of monotheism and moral excellence. The mention of Lot here serves as a testament to the unity of the prophetic mission—all prophets came with the same core message: worship Allah alone and live a life of purity and justice.

For us today, this verse is a call to appreciate the blessing of prophethood and the completion of that message in the final revelation. It also urges us to reflect on the consequences of moral decay in societies, and to stand firm for righteousness even when surrounded by corruption. The story of Lot teaches us that Allah’s support is with His righteous servants, and that no matter how powerful evil may seem, the truth will always prevail in the end.

Let this verse inspire us to honor the prophets by following their example—calling to goodness with patience, courage, and unwavering trust in Allah. And let it remind us that Allah’s mercy encompasses those who turn to Him, just as He saved Lot and his family from the punishment that befell the wrongdoers.
