Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Najjaynāhu (نَجَّيْنَاهُ): We saved him and delivered him from destruction.
  • Ahlahu (وَأَهْلَهُ): His family and household.
  • Ajma‘īn (أَجْمَعِينَ): All of them, without exception — emphasizing the completeness of the salvation.

Explanation of the Verse:

This verse refers back to the story of Prophet Lot (peace be upon him), whom Allah chose and honored with prophethood. The verse reminds us of the moment when Allah’s command came to destroy the wicked people of Sodom for their grave sins — particularly the abominable act of homosexuality, which was unprecedented among nations. At that critical time, Allah saved Lot and his entire family — all of them — from the severe punishment that struck his people. Not a single member of his believing household was left behind; they were all rescued by divine mercy before the torment descended.

However, the exception mentioned in other verses clarifies that his wife — the old, disbelieving woman — was not among the saved. She remained with the doomed people and perished with them because she shared their disbelief and did not support her husband’s mission. This shows that true salvation is not by blood relation but by faith and obedience to Allah.

A Call to Reflection and Faith:

This verse carries a profound lesson for every believer: Allah’s mercy is vast and His protection is absolute for those who remain steadfast in faith. Just as He saved Lot and his household from a painful punishment, He is capable of saving you from every hardship, trial, and calamity — provided you hold firmly to His rope and follow His messengers. Let this be a source of hope and reassurance: no matter how dark the circumstances around you may seem, Allah’s deliverance is near for the righteous. And let it also be a warning — that companionship with evil, even within one’s own family, cannot shield anyone from Allah’s justice. So purify your heart, cling to faith, and be among those who are saved, both in this life and the Hereafter.
