Word Meanings:
- مِن دُونِهِ (min doonihi): besides Him, other than Him, i.e., false deities and idols.
- خَسِرُوا أَنفُسَهُمْ (khasirū anfusahum): they lost themselves, meaning they caused their own ruin and destruction by earning eternal punishment.
- أَهْلِيهِمْ (ahlīhim): their families, referring to those whom they were promised in Paradise (like spouses and servants) but will never reach due to their disbelief.
- الْخُسْرَانُ الْمُبِينُ (al-khusrān al-mubīn): the clear, evident, and undeniable loss.
Explanation of the Verse:
After the Prophet (peace be upon him) declares his pure and sincere worship of Allah alone, Allah instructs him to address the polytheists with a tone of challenge and warning: "So worship whatever you wish besides Him." This is not a permission to worship false gods, but rather a stern rebuke and a threat—a way of saying: "If you insist on your falsehood, then go ahead and worship your idols; you will soon see the consequences of your choice." The Prophet's worship is secure and unaffected by their actions, for he has submitted wholly to the One True God.
Then comes the crucial clarification: "Say: Indeed, the true losers are those who lose themselves and their families on the Day of Resurrection." Who are these losers? They are the ones who, by their disbelief and polytheism in this world, have brought ruin upon their own souls—condemning them to the Fire—and have also lost the families and companions that were prepared for them in Paradise. Had they believed, they would have enjoyed the company of righteous spouses and servants in eternal bliss, but now they are separated from them forever. Some scholars explain that they lose their families in the sense that their believing relatives will be saved while they remain in the Fire, or that the promised delights of Paradise will never reach them.
The verse concludes with a powerful declaration: "Unquestionably, that is the manifest loss." This is the ultimate, undeniable loss—a loss so clear and complete that no one can doubt it. It is not a loss of wealth or worldly possessions, but the loss of one's very self and eternal happiness—a tragedy beyond measure.
A Call to Reflection:
Dear reader, pause and reflect on this profound truth. The greatest loss in existence is not losing money, health, or status—it is losing your soul and your eternal future. Every person will stand before Allah on a Day when no wealth or children will avail, and only faith and good deeds will matter. The polytheists of Makkah were warned, and we too are warned today: do not let the fleeting pleasures of this world deceive you into worshipping anything other than Allah—whether it be idols, desires, wealth, or status. Allah, in His infinite mercy, has opened the door of repentance for everyone until the final moment. He calls you to worship Him alone, the Creator and Sustainer of all existence, and He promises Paradise to those who submit to Him with sincerity. Do not be among the losers; be among the winners who will enjoy the eternal bliss of Paradise in the company of their loved ones, by the grace of Allah. The choice is yours—and the time to choose is now.
