  • Zulal (ظُلَل): Layers, canopies, or coverings that spread over and surround something, like a canopy or awning.
  • Min fawqihim (مِن فَوْقِهِمْ): From above them.
  • Min tahtihim (مِن تَحْتِهِمْ): From beneath them.
  • Yukhawwifu (يُخَوِّفُ): To make someone fear or warn them seriously.
  • Fattaqoon (فَاتَّقُونِ): So fear Me, be conscious of Me, and protect yourselves by obeying My commands and avoiding what I have forbidden.

Explanation of the Verse:

This verse paints a terrifying and vivid picture of the punishment that awaits the disbelievers and the wicked on the Day of Judgment. Allah describes that they will have layers of fire above them—canopies of flames, smoke, and scorching heat that cover them from every direction—and beneath them, similar layers of fire that serve as their beds and flooring. There is no escape, no shade, and no relief. The fire surrounds them completely, from above and from below, like a closed prison of torment.

This description is not merely to frighten; it is a purposeful warning from Allah, the Most Merciful, to His servants. He says: "That is what Allah warns His servants with." He is not threatening out of cruelty—far from it. He is alerting us out of love and mercy, so that we may take heed before it is too late. He then follows this terrifying image with a tender and compassionate call: "O My servants, so fear Me." Notice how He calls them "My servants"—a phrase filled with affection and closeness. He is reminding us that we belong to Him, and He desires nothing but our safety and success.

The call to "fear Me" here means to be conscious of Allah in all our actions, to obey His commands, and to stay away from what He has prohibited. It is an invitation to protect ourselves from this fire by living a life of faith, righteousness, and sincerity. The door of repentance is open, and the warning is given so that no one can claim ignorance on that Day.

A Da'wah Reflection:

Dear reader, imagine standing between layers of fire with no way out—this is the reality that awaits those who reject the truth and persist in sin. But Allah, in His infinite mercy, has given us the warning now, while we still have time. He does not want anyone to perish; He wants us to succeed. This verse is a call to wake up, to turn back to Him, and to build a life that pleases Him. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: "The Fire is surrounded by desires, and Paradise is surrounded by hardships" (Bukhari and Muslim). So choose the path that leads to eternal bliss, even if it requires patience and sacrifice. Fear Allah in this world, and you will be safe from the fire in the next. Let this warning ignite in your heart a sincere desire to draw closer to Allah, for He is the Most Forgiving, the Most Merciful, and He loves those who turn to Him.

📜 Verse 14-18 — Az-Zumar

Say, "Allah [alone] do I worship, sincere to Him in my religion,
So worship what you will besides Him." Say, "Indeed, the losers are the ones who will lose themselves and their families on the Day of Resurrection. Unquestionably, that is the manifest loss."
They will have canopies of fire above them and below them, canopies. By that Allah threatens His servants. O My servants, then fear Me.
But those who have avoided Taghut, lest they worship it, and turned back to Allah - for them are good tidings. So give good tidings to My servants
Who listen to speech and follow the best of it. Those are the ones Allah has guided, and those are people of understanding.
