Tafsir (Explanation):
O believing servants of Allah, when you travel through the earth — whether for trade, seeking provision, or any permissible purpose — Allah, in His infinite mercy, has made His religion easy for you. He has lifted from you any sin or blame if you shorten your prayer from four units to two, especially when you fear that the disbelievers may attack you or harm you while you are engaged in worship. This was the reality for the early Muslims, whose journeys were often fraught with danger, as the enemies of Islam lay in wait to ambush them. However, the authentic Sunnah of the Prophet (peace be upon him) has clarified that this concession of shortening the prayer is not restricted to times of fear alone; rather, it is a standing mercy for every traveler, whether in safety or in danger, as long as the journey is of a permissible distance.
Allah then reminds you: "Indeed, the disbelievers have always been to you a clear, open enemy." Their hostility is not hidden or ambiguous — it is manifest in their words and deeds. So be vigilant, take your precautions, and do not let your worship become a means of vulnerability. At the same time, do not abandon your prayer altogether; rather, Allah has given you a way to maintain your connection with Him even in the most trying circumstances.
This verse is a beautiful demonstration of Allah's care for His servants. He does not burden you beyond what you can bear, and He opens doors of ease for you in times of hardship. So when you travel, remember this concession with gratitude, and know that your Lord is always near, always aware of your conditions, and always desiring what is best for you. Let this mercy draw you closer to Him, for He is the One who knows your struggles and has already provided for them. And let the reminder of the disbelievers' enmity strengthen your resolve, for you are upon the truth, and the truth is always protected by its Lord.
