Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Al-Qa'idun (القاعدون): Those who stay behind and do not go out for jihad.
- Ghayru uli ad-darar (غير أولي الضرر): Those who are not excused due to a valid hardship such as illness, blindness, or disability.
- Al-Mujahidun (المجاهدون): Those who strive and fight in the cause of Allah.
- Darajah (درجة): A higher rank and station.
- Al-Husna (الحسنى): The best reward, which is Paradise.
Tafsir (Explanation):
Allah, the Most High, declares that those believers who remain behind from jihad—without any valid excuse such as sickness, disability, or other genuine hardships—are not equal to those who strive in His cause with their wealth and their lives. The one who sacrifices, endures hardship, and fights for the sake of Allah holds a far greater station in the sight of Allah than the one who sits idle at home while others strive.
Allah has elevated the mujahideen—those who spend their wealth and risk their lives—above those who stay behind, granting them a distinct rank of honor and virtue. This is because the mujahid combines sincere intention with action, while the one who stays behind due to a valid excuse has only the intention without the physical striving. Yet, in His infinite mercy, Allah has promised Paradise to both groups: the mujahideen who sacrifice, and the excused believers who are unable to participate due to genuine hardship. Both are promised the ultimate success of Paradise, for each has a sincere heart and a valid standing before Allah.
However, Allah then emphasizes that the mujahideen are favored with a tremendous reward—far greater in magnitude and excellence. Their sacrifice, their sleepless nights, their wounds, and their unwavering devotion earn them a special, immense bounty from their Lord that surpasses all others.
Da'wah Reflection:
Dear believer, this verse awakens within us a profound love for sacrifice and sincerity. Islam is not a religion of mere words or wishes—it is a faith of action, courage, and devotion. Allah honors those who step forward, who give from their wealth, and who offer their very souls for His cause. Yet, at the same time, see the beautiful mercy of Allah: He does not forget those who are unable, for He knows their hearts and their circumstances. So whether you are able to strive with your wealth, your time, your knowledge, or your physical strength—do not hold back. And if you are hindered by a genuine excuse, know that your Lord sees your intention and will reward you accordingly. Let this verse ignite in you a passion to be among those who give their best for Allah, and to never underestimate the value of a sincere heart striving in His path.
