📖 English Meaning
And a believing man from the family of Pharaoh who concealed his faith said, "Do you kill a man [merely] because he says, 'My Lord is Allah' while he has brought you clear proofs from your Lord? And if he should be lying, then upon him is [the consequence of] his lie; but if he should be truthful, there will strike you some of what he promises you. Indeed, Allah does not guide one who is a transgressor and a liar.

Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • "يَكْتُمُ إِيمَانَهُ" — conceals his faith, hiding it out of fear for his safety.
  • "بِالْبَيِّنَاتِ" — with clear, definitive proofs and miracles that leave no room for doubt.
  • "مُسْرِفٌ" — one who transgresses all bounds, exceeding the limits of truth and justice.
  • "كَذَّابٌ" — an inveterate liar, one who habitually fabricates falsehoods.

Tafsir (Explanation):

In the heart of Pharaoh’s own court, amidst his ministers and supporters, there stood a man who believed in Allah but kept his faith hidden — a secret believer who feared for his life yet could not remain silent in the face of such blatant injustice. When Pharaoh and his chiefs resolved to kill Prophet Musa (Moses), peace be upon him, this courageous man spoke up, challenging their murderous intent with wisdom and logic.

He addressed them with a question that struck at the very core of their conscience: "Do you intend to kill a man merely because he says: 'My Lord is Allah'?" He reminded them that Musa had brought them clear, undeniable miracles — the staff that transformed into a serpent, the shining hand, and other signs from their Lord — proofs that testified to the truth of his message. Was this man guilty of any crime other than worshipping Allah alone and calling to His path?

Then, with remarkable fairness and rationality, he presented a compelling argument that appealed to their own self-interest. He said: "If he is a liar, then his lie will be upon him — he alone will bear its consequences, and you will be free of any harm from him. But if he is truthful, then some of what he warns you of will befall you — and that would be your ruin." In other words, killing him would not protect them from the truth; rather, it would only hasten their destruction and make them deserving of the punishment they were warned about.

He concluded with a profound statement of divine justice: "Indeed, Allah does not guide one who is a transgressor and a liar." This was a subtle yet powerful reminder that Allah’s guidance is reserved for those who are sincere and truthful, not for those who exceed all bounds in their arrogance and fabricate falsehood against Him.

This noble believer’s words were a model of courageous advocacy for truth — he did not remain silent despite his fear, nor did he abandon his duty to advise his people. He combined wisdom, gentleness, and firmness in his approach, appealing to both their reason and their fear of consequences. His example teaches us that even in the most hostile environments, a believer must speak the truth with wisdom and courage, trusting that Allah is the ultimate protector and guide of His righteous servants.
