Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- ʿudhtu (عُذْتُ): I sought refuge and protection.
- Mutakabbir (مُتَكَبِّرٍ): One who is arrogant and haughty, refusing to submit to the truth.
- Yawm al-Ḥisāb (يَوْمِ الْحِسَابِ): The Day of Reckoning, when Allah will call all of creation to account for their deeds.
Explanation of the Verse:
When Prophet Musa (Moses, peace be upon him) heard Pharaoh’s threat against him—Pharaoh having declared his intention to kill him—Musa did not respond with fear or despair. Instead, he turned to his Lord with complete trust and reliance, saying: "Indeed, I have sought refuge with my Lord and your Lord—O people—from every arrogant one who does not believe in the Day of Reckoning."
In this powerful statement, Musa declares that his protection comes not from any human power, but from Allah—the Creator and Sustainer of all. He addresses Pharaoh and his people directly, reminding them that the Lord he seeks refuge with is also their Lord, the One who created them, sustains them, and will one day bring them back for judgment. By specifying "every arrogant one who does not believe in the Day of Reckoning," Musa identifies the root of all tyranny: arrogance before Allah and denial of accountability. The one who does not believe he will be held accountable feels free to oppress others, while the believer finds true security in Allah’s protection.
This verse teaches us a profound lesson: when faced with the threats of oppressors, the believer’s first and greatest defense is turning to Allah. No matter how powerful the tyrant may seem, Allah’s protection is far greater. Musa’s words also carry a gentle but firm call to Pharaoh and his people—reminding them that the same Lord who protects Musa is their Lord too, and that they should reflect on their arrogance before it is too late.
A Call to Reflection:
Dear reader, reflect on the beauty of this moment. A single man, standing before the mightiest tyrant of his time, declares with unwavering certainty: "I have sought refuge with my Lord and your Lord." This is the essence of true faith—a heart so connected to Allah that no earthly power can shake it. If you find yourself facing difficulties, oppression, or fear, know that this same refuge is open to you. Allah, the Lord of Musa, is also your Lord. Turn to Him, seek His protection, and let your heart find peace in His care. For the arrogant will surely fall, but those who place their trust in Allah will never be forsaken.
