Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Thamud: The people of Prophet Salih (peace be upon him), an ancient Arab tribe known for their strength and their carved dwellings in the mountains.
  • Hadaynāhum (we guided them): We showed them the path of truth and clarified the way of righteousness through reason, revelation, and the miracles of their prophet.
  • Fa’staḥabbū al-‘amā (they preferred blindness): They chose disbelief, ignorance, and stubbornness over faith and guidance.
  • Ṣā‘iqat al-‘adhāb al-hūn (the thunderbolt of humiliating punishment): A catastrophic, deafening blast that struck them with utter disgrace and destruction.
  • Al-Hūn: Humiliation and degradation.
  • Bimā kānū yaksibūn (because of what they used to earn): Due to their own deeds—their persistent denial and sins.

Tafsir (Explanation):

After mentioning the fate of the people of ‘Ād in the preceding verse, Allah now turns to the story of Thamud—the people of Prophet Salih. Allah, in His infinite mercy and justice, did not leave them without guidance. He sent them a noble prophet, granted them clear miracles (such as the she-camel), and showed them the path of truth through reason and revelation. He made the way of guidance crystal clear to them, leaving no excuse for ignorance.

Yet, despite this divine clarity, they made a tragic choice. Instead of embracing the light of faith, they preferred blindness—they chose disbelief, arrogance, and stubbornness over the truth. The word *istaḥabbū* conveys a deliberate preference, meaning they weighed the two options and consciously selected misguidance over guidance. This was not a mistake or a lapse; it was a willful rejection of what they knew to be true.

As a direct consequence of their own choices and actions, Allah seized them with a thunderbolt of humiliating punishment—a terrifying, deafening blast that destroyed them utterly and brought them shame and disgrace in this world and the next. This punishment was not arbitrary; it was the natural and just outcome of what their own hands had earned: their persistent denial of Allah, their mockery of His messengers, and their accumulation of sins.

A Call to Reflection and Action:

This verse carries a profound lesson for every soul that hears it. Allah does not wrong anyone; He guides all of humanity to the path of salvation, sending messengers, revealing scriptures, and placing signs in the universe and within ourselves. The choice, however, is ours. Just as Thamud chose blindness over sight, we too make daily choices—between obedience and disobedience, between truth and falsehood, between the temporary pleasures of this world and the eternal bliss of the Hereafter.

Let this story be a wake-up call. Do not let arrogance, habit, or the whispers of Shaytan lead you to prefer spiritual blindness over the radiant light of guidance. Allah’s mercy is vast, and His door of repentance is open until the moment of death. But when His punishment comes—whether in this life or the next—it is swift, severe, and humiliating for those who persist in wrongdoing.

Embrace the guidance that Allah has placed before you. Read the Qur’an, reflect on its meanings, and act upon its teachings. Let the fate of Thamud be a reminder that no one is too strong, too wealthy, or too powerful to escape the justice of Allah. And let the mercy of Allah be your hope, for He says: *“Say, O My servants who have transgressed against themselves, do not despair of the mercy of Allah. Indeed, Allah forgives all sins. Indeed, it is He who is the Forgiving, the Merciful”* (Az-Zumar 39:53).

Choose sight over blindness, faith over denial, and salvation over destruction—before the thunderbolt comes, and the door of return is closed forever.

📜 Verse 15-19 — Fussilat

As for 'Aad, they were arrogant upon the earth without right and said, "Who is greater than us in strength?" Did they not consider that Allah who created them was greater than them in strength? But they were rejecting Our signs.
So We sent upon them a screaming wind during days of misfortune to make them taste the punishment of disgrace in the worldly life; but the punishment of the Hereafter is more disgracing, and they will not be helped.
And as for Thamud, We guided them, but they preferred blindness over guidance, so the thunderbolt of humiliating punishment seized them for what they used to earn.
And We saved those who believed and used to fear Allah.
And [mention, O Muhammad], the Day when the enemies of Allah will be gathered to the Fire while they are [driven] assembled in rows,
