Translation — Tafsir
Key Words and Their Meanings:
- Najjaynā (وَنَجَّيْنَا): We saved/delivered (from punishment and destruction).
- Āmanū (آمَنُوا): Those who believed (in Allah and His messengers).
- Yattaqūn (يَتَّقُونَ): Those who are God-conscious, mindful of Allah, and protect themselves by following His commands and avoiding His prohibitions.
Explanation of the Verse:
In this verse, Allah (Glorified and Exalted be He) tells us about His mercy and justice. After mentioning the fate of the disbelieving nations of ʿĀd and Thamūd, who were destroyed for their arrogance and rejection of the truth, Allah immediately contrasts their end with that of the believers. He says: "And We saved those who believed and were mindful of Allah."
This means that when the punishment descended upon those nations, the believers among them were spared. They were not harmed by the torment that struck their people. Their salvation was not a matter of luck or chance—it was a direct result of two things: faith (īmān) and taqwā (God-consciousness) . Their faith was not merely a claim on their tongues; it was a sincere belief in Allah and His messengers, which translated into action. They obeyed Allah’s commands, stayed away from what He forbade, and lived their lives with constant awareness that Allah sees and knows all.
The verse beautifully highlights the difference between the two groups: the disbelievers relied on their own power and worldly strength, while the believers relied on Allah. When the moment of trial came, the disbelievers’ power was useless, but the believers’ faith became their shield and their rescue.
A Daʿwah Reflection:
This verse carries a profound and comforting message for every believer: Allah never abandons those who truly believe and remain conscious of Him. No matter how difficult the circumstances, no matter how surrounded you are by wrongdoing or oppression, Allah’s protection is with the righteous. The story of the believers saved from destruction is a timeless reminder that faith and taqwā are not just spiritual concepts—they are the keys to safety in this life and the Hereafter.
So, dear reader, hold fast to your faith. Let your heart be filled with trust in Allah, and let your actions reflect your awareness of Him. Even if the whole world turns against you, Allah’s promise stands firm: He saves those who believe and are mindful of Him. This is the path of true success—a path that leads to peace in this world and eternal bliss in the next.
