Word Meanings:

  • "Fāstakhaffa" (فَاسْتَخَفَّ): He sought to make them light-minded, i.e., he belittled their intellects and swayed them, treating them as foolish and easily led.
  • "Qawmahū" (قَوْمَهُ): His people — the chiefs and followers of Pharaoh among the Egyptians.
  • "Fa'aṭā'ūhu" (فَأَطَاعُوهُ): So they obeyed him — they followed his command and accepted his call to falsehood.
  • "Fāsiqīn" (فَاسِقِينَ): Those who have deviated from the path of obedience to Allah — rebellious, wicked, and defiantly disobedient.

Explanation of the Verse:

In this verse, Allah tells us about the state of Pharaoh and his people after the clear miracles of Prophet Musa (peace be upon him) had been shown to them. Instead of reflecting on these signs and turning to the truth, Pharaoh took a different approach: he "made his people light-minded" — meaning he exploited their weaknesses, belittled their intellects, and manipulated their emotions. He presented himself as their savior and Musa as a threat to their way of life, thereby swaying them to follow him in his arrogance and denial of the truth.

The phrase "so they obeyed him" reveals the tragic outcome: his people, despite witnessing the staff turning into a serpent and the hand shining white, chose to follow Pharaoh's deception. They did not obey him because he was right, but because they had already drifted far from the guidance of Allah. Their hearts were sealed, and their minds were clouded by their love for Pharaoh's worldly promises and their fear of his power.

Then Allah concludes with the reason for their downfall: "Indeed, they were a people who were defiantly disobedient (fāsiqīn)." Their disobedience was not a one-time mistake; it was their very nature. They had crossed the boundaries set by Allah, rejected His messengers, and persisted in corruption. This is why they were so easily swayed by Pharaoh — because a heart that is already far from Allah becomes an easy target for any false leader who appeals to its desires.

A Call to Reflection and Faith:

Dear reader, ponder deeply on this scene. Pharaoh did not force his people to follow him by the sword alone; he "made them light-minded" — he played with their minds and emotions. He made falsehood appear attractive and truth seem threatening. This is the method of every tyrant and every deceiver throughout history, and it remains so today.

But the lesson here is for you: Do not let anyone belittle your intellect or sway your heart away from the truth. Allah has given you a mind to think and a heart to feel. When you hear the words of the Qur'an, when you see the signs of Allah in the universe, do not let anyone — no matter how powerful, wealthy, or persuasive — turn you away from the path of your Creator.

The people of Pharaoh obeyed him because they were already fāsiqīn — they had lost their connection with Allah. But you, dear believer, have the opportunity to be different. Hold fast to the Qur'an and the Sunnah, and let your obedience be to Allah and His Messenger alone. For whoever obeys Allah, Allah will protect him from every tyrant and every deceiver.

And remember: the end of Pharaoh and his people was drowning in the sea, while Musa and his followers were saved. The truth always prevails, and falsehood always perishes. So be among those who follow the truth, and never let anyone "make you light-minded" away from it.

📜 Verse 52-56 — Az-Zukhruf

Or am I [not] better than this one who is insignificant and hardly makes himself clear?
Then why have there not been placed upon him bracelets of gold or come with him the angels in conjunction?"
So he bluffed his people, and they obeyed him. Indeed, they were [themselves] a people defiantly disobedient [of Allah].
And when they angered Us, We took retribution from them and drowned them all.
And We made them a precedent and an example for the later peoples.
