Translation — Tafsir
Key Words and Their Meanings:
- "Minkum" (مِنكُم): From you — meaning, in place of you or instead of you.
- "La-ja'alnā" (لَجَعَلْنَا): We would have made or appointed.
- "Malā'ikah" (مَلَائِكَةً): Angels.
- "Yakhlufūn" (يَخْلُفُونَ): They succeed or take the place of others — i.e., they would succeed one another, generation after generation, just as humans do.
Explanation of the Verse:
This verse serves as a profound reminder of Allah’s absolute power and sovereignty over all creation. Allah, the Almighty, declares: "And if We had willed, We could have made from you angels on the earth, succeeding one another."
The meaning here is that if Allah had willed to destroy the human race — the descendants of Adam — He could have done so without any difficulty. He could have replaced them entirely with angels who would inhabit the earth and succeed one another, just as humans do. These angels would be devoted to worshipping Allah alone, never associating any partner with Him, and perfectly obedient to His commands.
This statement comes in the context of the polytheists of Mecca who rejected the message of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and questioned why the Messenger was a human being rather than an angel. They said: "If Allah had wanted to send a messenger, He would have sent an angel." In response, Allah reminds them that He is not bound by their expectations. He does whatever He wills, and if He had wanted to create angels as inhabitants of the earth — or even as messengers — He could have done so. But His wisdom dictated that human messengers be sent to human communities, because it is easier for people to relate to and learn from one of their own kind.
The verse also carries a subtle but powerful warning: humanity is not indispensable. The continuation of human life on earth is purely by Allah’s grace and mercy. If people persist in disobedience and disbelief, Allah is fully capable of wiping them out and bringing forth a creation that would worship Him more perfectly — such as angels who never sin.
A Call to Reflection and Faith:
Dear reader, pause and reflect on the greatness of this message. The One who created you from nothing, who sustains you every moment, and who has honoured you with the ability to know Him and worship Him — He is the same One who could replace you in the blink of an eye. This is not a threat to instil fear alone, but an invitation to recognise your true position before your Lord. You are not the owner of this earth; you are a guest upon it, and your host is the Most Merciful.
Let this verse awaken in your heart a deep sense of gratitude. Allah chose you to be human, to be among the followers of the final Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), and to have the opportunity to earn eternal Paradise through faith and good deeds. The angels, despite their perfection in worship, do not have the same rank as a believing human who strives against his desires for the sake of Allah. So do not waste this precious opportunity. Turn to your Lord with sincerity, obey His commands, and stay away from what He has forbidden. For He is the One who says to a thing, "Be," and it is — and He is the One who, out of His infinite mercy, keeps you alive so that you may return to Him and seek His forgiveness.
