Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • "Abd": A servant/slave of Allah, indicating complete submission and servitude to Him.
  • "An'amna 'alayh": We bestowed favor upon him — referring to the blessings of prophethood and messengership.
  • "Mathalan li-Bani Isra'il": A sign, lesson, or example for the Children of Israel.

Tafsir (Explanation):

This verse addresses a critical misconception about Prophet Jesus (peace be upon him). Allah clarifies that Jesus is nothing more than a servant of Allah upon whom Allah bestowed the great favor of prophethood and revelation. He was not divine, nor the son of God, nor worthy of worship — rather, he was a created being, a humble servant who submitted completely to his Lord.

Allah then states that He made Jesus a sign and a lesson for the Children of Israel. His miraculous birth without a father — created by the direct command of Allah — served as a powerful demonstration of Allah's absolute power over all things. Just as Allah created Adam without a father or mother, He created Jesus without a father, proving that creation is entirely in Allah's hands and that no one shares in His divine attributes.

This verse corrects both extremes: those who elevated Jesus to divinity and those who disrespected him. The truth lies in the middle — Jesus was a noble prophet, a beloved servant of Allah, and a living miracle for his people.

Da'wah Reflection:

How beautiful is the balanced teaching of Islam! It neither exaggerates the status of prophets nor diminishes their honor. Jesus (peace be upon him) is revered as one of the greatest messengers, yet he remains a servant of Allah — and this very servitude is his highest honor. When we recognize that even the mightiest of Allah's creation are but servants of Him, our hearts fill with humility and love for our Creator. This verse invites us to reflect on the power of Allah who creates as He wills, and to submit to Him alone, for He is worthy of all worship. Let us learn from this beautiful example and strive to be sincere servants of Allah, following the footsteps of His righteous prophets.

📜 Verse 57-61 — Az-Zukhruf

And when the son of Mary was presented as an example, immediately your people laughed aloud.
And they said, "Are your gods better, or is he?" They did not present the comparison except for [mere] argument. But, [in fact], they are a people prone to dispute.
Jesus was not but a servant upon whom We bestowed favor, and We made him an example for the Children of Israel.
And if We willed, We could have made [instead] of you angels succeeding [one another] on the earth.
And indeed, Jesus will be [a sign for] knowledge of the Hour, so be not in doubt of it, and follow Me. This is a straight path.
