Word Meanings:

  • Batshan (بَطْشًا): Severe strength, forceful grip, or overwhelming power in punishment and might.
  • Mathalu al-awwaleen (مَثَلُ الْأَوَّلِينَ): The exemplary tale, lesson, or account of the earlier nations that serves as a warning and a striking precedent.

Explanation of the Verse:

This verse follows a profound truth: throughout history, Allah sent many prophets to earlier communities, and every single time a prophet came to them, they mocked him and rejected his message—just as your people, O Muhammad, mock you. But then comes the decisive statement: "So We destroyed those who were even more severe in power than them" — meaning, those past nations were far mightier, wealthier, and more formidable than the disbelievers of Quraysh. They had towering buildings, immense armies, and unmatched physical strength, yet none of that protected them from Allah’s punishment when they persisted in denial and arrogance.

The phrase "and the example of the earlier ones has passed" means that the story of their destruction has already been recorded and preserved in the Quran and in history—like a well-known proverb that travels from tongue to tongue. The fate of the people of Noah, 'Ad, Thamud, the people of Lot, and the dwellers of Midian stands as an eternal lesson: their power did not save them, their numbers did not shield them, and their mockery only hastened their ruin.

So if Allah destroyed those who were far stronger than the Quraysh, then He is certainly able to destroy the Quraysh as well—and no one should ever feel secure from His might. This verse is a direct consolation to the Prophet ﷺ and to every believer who faces mockery and rejection: you are not alone, and the outcome is already known. The arrogant will fall, and the truth will prevail.

A Call to Reflection:

Dear reader, look at the world around you. Where are the mighty empires of old? Where are the Pharaohs, the tyrants, and the superpowers that once filled the earth with their strength? They are gone—turned into stories and lessons. But the promise of Allah remains, and His word stands firm. Let this verse be a source of comfort when you are mocked for your faith, and a source of warning when you are tempted by arrogance. The power of Allah is greater than any human force, and His justice is swifter than any human plan. So hold fast to your faith, for the end belongs to the righteous, and the example of the earlier ones has already passed—so take heed before it is too late.

📜 Verse 6-10 — Az-Zukhruf

And how many a prophet We sent among the former peoples,
But there would not come to them a prophet except that they used to ridicule him.
And We destroyed greater than them in [striking] power, and the example of the former peoples has preceded.
And if you should ask them, "Who has created the heavens and the earth?" they would surely say, "They were created by the Exalted in Might, the Knowing."
[The one] who has made for you the earth a bed and made for you upon it roads that you might be guided
