Explanation of the Verse:
O you who have truly believed in Allah and His Messenger and who strive to follow His guidance — Allah, in His immense mercy and love for you, teaches you the highest form of respect and etiquette toward His beloved Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). He commands you not to raise your voices above the voice of the Prophet when speaking with him, and not to address him with loud, harsh, or careless speech the way you might address one another in ordinary conversation.
Rather, you are to honour him with gentle, soft, and dignified words. Do not call him by his name alone, as you would call your peers — like saying "O Muhammad" — but address him with titles of honour and reverence, such as "O Messenger of Allah" or "O Prophet of Allah." This is not merely a matter of outward manners; it is a reflection of the deep respect and love that faith demands for the one whom Allah chose to deliver His final message to humanity.
The reason for this command is profoundly serious: Allah warns that failing to show this proper adab (etiquette) could cause your good deeds to become nullified — and you would not even realise it. This means that a believer might lose the reward of their sincere efforts while being completely unaware, simply because of a lack of reverence in their conduct toward the Prophet (peace be upon him).
This verse instils in us a beautiful lesson: that faith is not only about what is in the heart, but also about how we express it through our words and actions. The companions of the Prophet (may Allah be pleased with them) understood this so deeply that, after this verse was revealed, they would speak to him so softly that they could barely be heard, out of love and awe.
Dear believer, let this verse inspire you to love the Prophet (peace be upon him) in a way that transforms your character. Respecting him is respecting the message he brought — the Qur’an and the Sunnah. When you follow his guidance with humility and reverence, your deeds are protected and your heart is purified. And know that Allah does not command anything except that it carries immense wisdom and blessing for those who obey. So hold fast to this beautiful adab, and let it be a means of drawing closer to Allah and His Messenger, and a safeguard for the reward of your good deeds.
