Word Meanings:

  • Dhikrā (ذِكْرَىٰ): A reminder, admonition, or lesson that awakens the heart and mind.
  • Qalb (قَلْبٌ): Here it refers to a sound intellect and a living, perceptive heart—one that is capable of understanding and reflecting.
  • Alqā al-samʿa (أَلْقَى السَّمْعَ): To lend one’s ear attentively, to listen with full focus and intent.
  • Shahīd (شَهِيد): Present and attentive, with a heart fully aware and not distracted or heedless.

Explanation of the Verse:

In this profound verse, Allah draws our attention to the fate of past nations who were destroyed for their arrogance and disobedience. He declares that in their destruction—in the very ruins of their civilizations and the stories of their end—there lies a powerful and vivid reminder for anyone who possesses a living heart that reasons and reflects, or who lends an attentive ear while being fully present in mind and spirit, not absent or negligent.

The verse beautifully distinguishes between two types of people who can benefit from these lessons: first, the one who has an active, discerning intellect—a heart that is alive to truth and capable of drawing wisdom from the signs around them. Second, the one who may not have reached that level of insight but is willing to listen sincerely, with an open and focused mind, truly present in the moment, ready to receive guidance. Both paths lead to the same destination: awakening from heedlessness and turning back to Allah.

This is an invitation to every soul to reflect deeply on the patterns of history—how nations rose and fell, how arrogance led to ruin, and how obedience led to success. The Qur'an is not merely a book to be recited; it is a living guide, and its stories are mirrors through which we can see ourselves and correct our course before it is too late.

A Da'wah Reflection:

Dear reader, this verse is a gentle yet urgent call to you. It tells you that your heart is a treasure—if you keep it alive and attentive, it will lead you to the truth. You do not need to be a scholar or a philosopher; you only need a sincere heart and a listening ear. Allah has placed these lessons before you so that you may never be lost. The stories of the past are not distant tales; they are signposts on your own journey. Open your heart, lend your ear, and let the Qur'an speak to you. It is never too late to turn back, and every moment of reflection is a step closer to the peace and purpose your soul craves. Let this verse be the key that unlocks your heart to the beauty of Islam and the mercy of its Creator.

📜 Verse 35-39 — Qaf

They will have whatever they wish therein, and with Us is more.
And how many a generation before them did We destroy who were greater than them in [striking] power and had explored throughout the lands. Is there any place of escape?
Indeed in that is a reminder for whoever has a heart or who listens while he is present [in mind].
And We did certainly create the heavens and earth and what is between them in six days, and there touched Us no weariness.
So be patient, [O Muhammad], over what they say and exalt [Allah] with praise of your Lord before the rising of the sun and before its setting,
