Word Meanings:

  • Qarn (قَرْنٍ): A generation or a nation that lived in a particular era.
  • Batshan (بَطْشًا): Strength, power, and forceful might.
  • Naqqabū (نَقَّبُوا): They traveled extensively, traversed the land, and searched through its pathways and routes.
  • Maḥīṣ (مَحِيص): A refuge, escape, or place of safety to flee to.

Explanation of the Verse:

In this verse, Allah addresses the disbelievers of Quraysh in Makkah, reminding them of a profound and sobering truth: countless nations before them were destroyed, despite being far superior in strength, power, and resources. These earlier peoples were mightier in physical force, built grand civilizations, and dominated vast territories. Yet, when Allah’s decree of punishment arrived, all their power proved utterly useless.

The verse then describes how these destroyed nations "traveled through the land" — they roamed far and wide, crossing every valley and mountain, searching desperately for any place of refuge or escape from the divine punishment that had befallen them. They sought a hiding spot, a shelter, or any means of fleeing from Allah’s wrath. But the answer was clear: there was no escape. No corner of the earth could shield them, no fortress could protect them, and no ally could save them from what Allah had ordained.

This serves as a powerful lesson: material strength, technological advancement, and worldly achievements are no guarantee of survival or success. What truly matters is one’s relationship with Allah. Those who reject His messengers and persist in disbelief will face the same fate as those before them — regardless of how powerful they may seem.

A Call to Reflection and Faith:

Dear reader, pause and reflect on this profound truth. The nations of old — the ʿĀd, the Thamūd, the Pharaohs, and countless others — were far stronger than any nation today. They built towering structures, commanded vast armies, and enjoyed unmatched prosperity. Yet, when they defied Allah and rejected His guidance, all their might evaporated like morning mist.

This verse is not merely a historical account; it is a living reminder for every generation. It calls upon us to examine our own lives: Are we relying on our strength, wealth, and status, or are we turning to Allah, the All-Powerful, who holds everything in His hands? The message is clear — no matter how far we run, no matter where we seek refuge, there is no escape from Allah’s justice. But equally, there is no greater refuge than His mercy.

So, embrace the path of faith and righteousness. Turn to Allah before it is too late, for He is the Most Forgiving, the Most Merciful. He opens His doors to those who repent and seek His pleasure. Let the fate of past nations be a warning, and let the promise of Allah’s mercy be your hope. Indeed, the only true safety lies in submission to the One who created you, sustains you, and will one day call you back to Him.

35لَهُم مَّا يَشَاءُونَ فِيهَا وَلَدَيْنَا مَزِيدٌ
They will have whatever they wish therein, and with Us is more.

Indeed in that is a reminder for whoever has a heart or who listens while he is present [in mind].
And We did certainly create the heavens and earth and what is between them in six days, and there touched Us no weariness.
