Translation — Tafsir
Key Words and Their Meanings:
- As-Samaa' (السَّمَاءِ): The sky or heavens — the celestial expanse above us.
- Dhati (ذَاتِ): Possessor of; having or characterized by.
- Al-Hubuk (الْحُبُكِ): This word carries rich meanings — it refers to something with beautiful, perfect, and precise formation; well-woven patterns like the threads of a finely crafted garment; or the paths and orbits of celestial bodies. It also conveys the idea of beauty, order, and exquisite design. The singular is *habeekah*, meaning a well-arranged path or a beautifully woven texture.
The Interpretation:
In this profound verse, Allah — the Almighty — takes an oath by the sky that is characterized by *al-hubuk*: the heavens that display perfect craftsmanship, breathtaking beauty, and intricate order. Just as a skilled weaver produces a fabric with flawless, interlocking threads, so too is the sky created with unparalleled precision — its stars, planets, and galaxies moving along their ordained paths, its layers and expanses reflecting a design so magnificent that it leaves every observer in awe.
This oath is not merely a statement of wonder; it is a divine testimony to the truth of the message being conveyed. By swearing by this majestic creation, Allah draws the attention of humanity to the undeniable signs of His power and wisdom. The sky, with its flawless structure and harmonious order, stands as a living witness to the greatness of its Creator — and to the truth of the Qur'an and the prophethood of Muhammad (peace be upon him).
When we reflect on this verse, we are reminded that the universe is not a chaotic accident; it is a masterpiece of divine artistry. Every star that twinkles, every galaxy that spins, and every path that celestial bodies traverse is a sign pointing to the One who created it all. This beautiful oath invites us to open our eyes, to ponder the heavens above, and to recognize that the same Creator who perfected the sky has also perfected His final revelation — the Qur'an — and chosen His final messenger to guide humanity.
For those who turn away from this truth, the verse implies that their turning away is not due to any flaw in the message, but rather due to their own neglect of the signs around them. The heavens call out to them, yet they refuse to listen. But for those who reflect, the sky becomes a gateway to faith — a constant reminder that the One who fashioned such perfection is worthy of our worship, our love, and our obedience.
So, dear reader, look up at the sky tonight. See its beauty, its order, its perfection. Let it speak to your heart. For the same Hand that wove the heavens with such precision has woven for you a path to guidance — through the Qur'an and the Sunnah. Do not turn away from it. Embrace it, and you will find a beauty far greater than the stars themselves: the peace of a heart connected to its Creator.
