So which of the favors of your Lord would you deny?
📜

Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Ālā’ (آلَاء): The countless favors, blessings, and bounties of Allah.
  • Rabbi-kumā (رَبِّكُمَا): Your Lord — addressed to both mankind and jinn.
  • Tukadhdhibān (تُكَذِّبَانِ): You both deny or reject.

Explanation of the Verse:

This profound verse, repeated throughout Surah Ar-Rahman, addresses both humans and jinn together, asking them a question that strikes at the very heart of their relationship with their Creator: "So which of the favors of your Lord will you both deny?"

The question is rhetorical, meant to awaken the conscience. It challenges every soul to reflect: When you look at the sky above you, the earth beneath your feet, the air you breathe, the water you drink, the health in your bodies, the minds that think, the hearts that beat — when you witness the sun rising and setting in perfect order, the moon and stars guiding you through darkness, the fruits that nourish you, the families that comfort you, and the very ability to hear this message and understand it — which of these can you honestly say is not a blessing from your Lord?

The verse uses the dual form "kumā" (you both) to include both species of creation — mankind and jinn — because both have been given intellect, free will, and the capacity to recognize their Creator. Both have received countless blessings, and both will be held accountable for how they respond to these blessings.

The repetition of this verse ten times in the Surah serves as a powerful refrain, a rhythmic reminder that interrupts the descriptions of Paradise and Hell, of mercy and punishment, asking again and again: After all this, which blessing will you deny?

A Call to Reflection and Gratitude:

Dear reader, pause for a moment and count the blessings around you. Your eyes that read these words, your heart that pumps without your command, the earth that holds you steady, the sky that shelters you. Every breath you take is a gift you did not earn and cannot repay. The question is not whether Allah has blessed you — the question is whether you will acknowledge it.

The one who recognizes blessings feels gratitude, and gratitude draws one closer to the Giver. The one who denies blessings becomes arrogant, and arrogance distances one from mercy. This verse invites you to be among the grateful, to let your tongue utter praise, your heart feel love, and your limbs obey the One who has given you everything.

Let this beautiful question echo in your soul every day: "Which of my Lord's favors can I possibly deny?" The answer, for every sincere heart, is: "None, my Lord. All praise and thanks belong to You alone."
