Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Ma'shar (معشر): A group, community, or assembly.
  • Tanfudhu (تنفذوا): To escape, penetrate, or pass through and get out.
  • Aqtaar (أقطار): The sides, borders, or extremities.
  • Sultaan (سلطان): Authority, power, proof, or a compelling force.

Tafsir (Explanation):

On the Day of Judgment, Allah will address both jinn and mankind together, saying: "O assembly of jinn and humans! If you think you can escape My decree and flee from My judgment, then try to slip away through the borders of the heavens and the earth — go ahead and escape if you truly can!"

But this is a challenge that carries within it the certainty of failure. For no matter how powerful, cunning, or advanced you may be, you will never be able to escape Allah's dominion. The only way you could ever penetrate those boundaries would be with a power and authority — but where would you get such power? You possess no authority over yourselves, let alone over the universe. You cannot even benefit yourselves or ward off harm from your own souls, so how could you possibly overcome the will of your Creator?

This verse is a profound reminder of Allah's absolute sovereignty. It humbles the proudest of hearts and makes every soul realize its utter helplessness before its Lord. No fortress can protect you from Allah, no technology can outrun His decree, and no strategy can outsmart His plan. Yet, in this very helplessness lies the beauty of Islam — for the One who holds all power is also the Most Merciful, and He has opened the door of repentance and salvation to you. So instead of trying to flee from Him, run to Him! Seek His forgiveness, embrace His guidance, and you will find that His mercy is greater than His wrath, and His love for His servants surpasses all imagination.

Then comes the recurring refrain that echoes throughout this blessed chapter: So which of the favors of your Lord will you both deny?
