Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • آلَاء (Ālā’): The countless favors, blessings, and bounties of Allah.
  • تُكَذِّبَانِ (Tukadhdhibān): You both deny or reject (addressed to the dual form, referring to mankind and jinn).

Tafsir (Explanation):

This verse is a powerful rhetorical question directed at both mankind and jinn, the two creations endowed with intellect and choice. Allah asks: "So which of the favors of your Lord do you both deny?" The repetition of this verse throughout Surah Ar-Rahman serves as a striking reminder that no matter how many blessings Allah bestows—whether they are the sun and moon, the heavens and earth, the fruits and rivers, or the ultimate reward of Paradise—human beings and jinn are utterly incapable of enumerating them, let alone repaying them. Yet, despite this overwhelming generosity, many still turn away and reject the truth.

The question is not seeking an answer; rather, it is a rebuke and an awakening. It challenges the listener to reflect: Can you point to a single blessing that you can honestly deny? Your very breath, your heartbeat, the water you drink, the food you eat, the faith in your heart—all are from your Lord. Even the ability to read this verse and ponder its meaning is a favor from Him. When you deny His oneness, His messengers, or His commands, you are effectively denying these endless gifts.

This verse also carries a profound call to gratitude. The believer, upon hearing it, should feel a surge of love and humility, recognizing that every moment is wrapped in divine mercy. It invites you to say, "We believe, O Lord, and we affirm all Your favors—we do not deny any of them." It softens the heart, turning it toward thankfulness, and reminds us that the greatest favor of all is the guidance to Islam—the very path that leads to eternal bliss in the presence of the Most Merciful.

So, dear reader, let this verse be a mirror for your soul. Count your blessings, and you will find them beyond number. Then ask yourself: How can I ever repay such kindness? The answer is simple: by submitting to Him, loving Him, and living a life that reflects His beauty. That is the way of the grateful, and it is the key to everlasting joy.

So which of the favors of your Lord would you deny?
O company of jinn and mankind, if you are able to pass beyond the regions of the heavens and the earth, then pass. You will not pass except by authority [from Allah].

There will be sent upon you a flame of fire and smoke, and you will not defend yourselves.
36فَبِأَيِّ آلَاءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبَانِ
