Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Shuwāẓ (شُوَاظٌ): A flame of fire without smoke — pure, intense fire.
- Nuḥās (نُحَاسٌ): Molten copper or brass; also interpreted as smoke without flame, or scorching wind mixed with fire.
- Tantaṣirān (تَنتَصِرَانِ): You two cannot defend yourselves, nor can you find any helper or protector to save you.
Explanation of the Verse:
O mankind and jinn, when the Day of Judgment arrives and you are commanded to face the consequences of your deeds, a terrifying punishment will be unleashed upon you: a blazing flame of fire without any smoke, and molten copper poured over your heads — or, according to another interpretation, a dense, suffocating smoke. You will be completely powerless. Neither your strength, nor your wealth, nor your status, nor any alliance between humans and jinn will avail you in the slightest. You will not be able to resist, escape, or find anyone to come to your aid. All means of protection will fail, and every door of rescue will be shut before you.
This is a stark warning from the Most Merciful — a reminder that His power is absolute and that no creature, however mighty, can stand against His decree. Yet, in the very next breath, the verse that follows asks: *"So which of the favors of your Lord will you deny?"* This juxtaposition is a profound act of divine mercy. It tells us that the door of repentance is still open, that the path of guidance is still available, and that the same Lord who warns of punishment is the One who invites to forgiveness.
A Call to Reflection and Action:
Dear reader, this verse is not meant to frighten you into despair, but to awaken you into hope. If you are alive today, it means Allah has given you a chance — a chance to turn back to Him, to seek His forgiveness, and to live a life that pleases Him. The fire He warns of is real, but so is His mercy. He says in another verse: *"Say, O My servants who have transgressed against themselves, do not despair of the mercy of Allah. Indeed, Allah forgives all sins."* (Az-Zumar 39:53). So let this warning be a motivation, not a source of hopelessness. Run to your Lord before that Day comes when no one can help you. Embrace Islam with a sincere heart, perform your prayers, give charity, and treat others with kindness. The One who created you loves you more than a mother loves her child, and He has prepared for His righteous servants gardens of eternal bliss. Choose that path today, and you will never regret it.
