So which of the favors of your Lord would you deny?
📜

Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • آلَاء (Ālā’): The countless blessings, favors, and bounties of Allah.
  • رَبِّكُمَا (Rabbikumā): Your Lord — addressed to both mankind and jinn.
  • تُكَذِّبَانِ (Tukadhdhibān): You both deny or reject.

Explanation of the Verse:

This profound verse is a rhetorical question that Allah, in His infinite mercy and wisdom, poses to both mankind and jinn — the two creations endowed with intellect and free will. It translates to: "So which of the favors of your Lord would you both deny?"

The question is not one of ignorance, but rather a powerful, soul-stirring reminder. It challenges the listener to reflect deeply: After all the blessings that surround you — the air you breathe, the food that sustains you, the health you enjoy, the guidance that leads you to truth — which of these can you honestly claim is not from your Lord? Which one can you deny?

This verse is repeated multiple times throughout Surah Ar-Rahman, each time following a different set of blessings — from the creation of the heavens and the earth, to the sun and the moon, to the fruits and provisions, to the descriptions of Paradise. With every mention of a blessing, the refrain comes: "So which of the favors of your Lord would you both deny?"

The address to "both" (dual form) encompasses all of humanity and all of the jinn, making it universal and timeless. It calls every soul to accountability — to look at the undeniable reality of Allah's grace and to respond with gratitude, not denial.

A Call to Reflection and Gratitude:

Dear reader, pause and ponder for a moment. Every breath you take is a favor. Every heartbeat is a mercy. The very ability to read these words, to understand them, to reflect upon them — all are blessings from your Lord. The question echoes across time: after all this, which blessing will you deny?

This verse softens the heart and awakens the conscience. It invites you to a life of thankfulness, to recognize the Hand of the Divine in every aspect of your existence. When you truly realize that every good thing comes from Allah, your heart naturally turns to Him in love, humility, and submission.

Let this beautiful verse be a daily reminder: count your blessings, and you will find them countless. And with every blessing, let your tongue utter: "All praise is due to Allah." For the one who is grateful, Allah promises more. And the one who denies — let them reflect on the consequences, for the Lord is All-Powerful, and His favors are not to be taken lightly.

May Allah make us among those who recognize His blessings and respond with gratitude and obedience. Ameen.
