Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Al-Yāqūt (الياقوت): Ruby or sapphire—precious, transparent gemstones known for their brilliance, purity, and radiant color.
- Al-Marjān (المرجان): Coral—specifically the fine, lustrous pearls or red coral beads, prized for their clarity, smoothness, and beauty.
Explanation of the Verse:
Allah, the Most Merciful, describes the pure companions (Hūr ʿĪn) of Paradise in this verse, saying: "As if they were rubies and coral." This is a vivid simile that captures their breathtaking beauty and perfection. Just as rubies are renowned for their deep, glowing redness and transparency, and coral for its pure whiteness and delicate luster, these heavenly spouses combine the most exquisite qualities: their faces radiate with a rosy glow, their skin is luminous and clear, and their overall appearance is flawless—untouched by any imperfection. The comparison highlights not only their physical beauty but also their purity, refinement, and the sheer delight they bring to the eyes of the believers who will be blessed with them.
This imagery invites us to reflect on the generosity of Allah, who has prepared for His righteous servants delights beyond human imagination. The precious stones mentioned are among the most valued treasures on earth, yet in Paradise, they serve merely as a metaphor for something far greater—the reward of the believers. It reminds us that the pleasures of the Hereafter are incomparable to anything we know in this world, and that every act of patience, faith, and righteousness in this life will be met with rewards that exceed all expectations.
A Daʿwah Reflection:
Dear reader, when you hear this description, let your heart yearn for what Allah has promised. The Qur’an does not merely tell us about Paradise—it paints it in vivid colors so that our souls may be drawn to it with longing and hope. This verse is an invitation to strive for the eternal bliss that awaits those who believe and do good deeds. It teaches us that Allah’s mercy is vast, and His rewards are beyond measure. So, hold fast to your faith, increase in good deeds, and never lose hope in His grace. For the One who created rubies and coral with such beauty is certainly capable of granting His beloved servants what is far more magnificent. Let this beautiful promise be a motivation to purify your heart, strengthen your connection with Allah, and live each day with the Hereafter in mind.
