Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- آلَاء (Ālā'): The countless favors, blessings, and bounties of Allah.
- رَبِّكُمَا (Rabbi-kumā): Your Lord — addressed to both humankind and jinn.
- تُكَذِّبَانِ (Tukadhdhibān): You both deny or reject.
Explanation of the Verse:
This verse is a powerful rhetorical question directed at both humans and jinn, the two creations endowed with intellect and free will. Allah asks: "So which of the favors of your Lord do you both deny?"
The repetition of this verse throughout Surah Ar-Rahman serves as a profound reminder that every blessing we enjoy — from the breath in our lungs to the sun that warms us, from the gift of faith to the promise of Paradise — is a favor from Allah alone. The question is not seeking information, for Allah knows all; rather, it is a gentle yet piercing call to reflection and gratitude. It challenges us to look at our lives and honestly ask ourselves: Can we point to even a single blessing that does not come from Him?
The address to both humans and jinn highlights the universality of Allah's mercy and His justice. Both creations are accountable, both are recipients of His boundless generosity, and both are invited to acknowledge His sovereignty. The verse implies that denial of Allah's favors is not merely ingratitude but a form of self-deception, for the evidence of His kindness surrounds us at every moment.
A Da'wah Reflection:
Dear reader, pause and consider: When you wake up in the morning, when you taste clean water, when you feel the love of family, when your heart finds peace in remembrance — these are not coincidences. They are deliberate gifts from a Lord who loves you and wants you to know Him. The verse does not say "which of your achievements" or "which of your rights" — it says "which of your Lord's favors." This shifts our perspective from entitlement to gratitude, from arrogance to humility.
The beauty of this question is that it leaves us with no answer except submission. When we truly count our blessings, we realize they are beyond number. So let this verse be a turning point: instead of denying or overlooking Allah's favors, let us acknowledge them with a grateful heart, a praising tongue, and limbs that obey Him. For the one who recognizes the Giver, the gifts become a bridge to eternal happiness — both in this world and in the Hereafter.
