Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Al-Fath (الفتح): The conquest of Makkah, which occurred in the 8th year of Hijrah and marked a turning point in Islamic history.
- Mīrāth (ميراث): Inheritance; here it means that everything in the heavens and the earth ultimately belongs to Allah and returns to Him.
- Al-Ḥusnā (الحسنى): The best reward, which is Paradise (Jannah).
Tafsir (Explanation):
What is preventing you, O believers, from spending in the cause of Allah? Why do you hold back your wealth when you know that you will inevitably leave it all behind? Everything you possess—your money, your property, your very lives—will one day be inherited by Allah alone, for He is the sole and eternal Owner of the heavens and the earth. Nothing remains with you forever; so spend now, while you still have the chance to earn His pleasure.
Allah then makes a beautiful distinction between two groups of believers. Those who spent their wealth and fought in His cause before the conquest of Makkah—when Islam was weak, when the believers were few, when sacrifice was costly and the outcome uncertain—these are granted a greater rank and a higher station with Allah than those who spent and fought after the conquest, when Islam had triumphed, when people were entering the religion in crowds, and when the path was easier. This does not diminish the reward of the latter group, for Allah has promised Paradise to both groups—to the early pioneers and to those who came later. Both are beloved to Him, and both are destined for His mercy.
Yet the distinction in degrees reflects the profound wisdom of Allah: the greater the hardship, the greater the reward. The early Muslims gave from their scarcity and fought against overwhelming odds, and their sincerity and sacrifice were unmatched.
And Allah is All-Aware of everything you do—whether in public or in secret, whether before or after the conquest. Nothing escapes His knowledge, and He will reward every soul according to its deeds with perfect justice and boundless generosity.
A Call to Action:
Dear believer, reflect on this verse and let it move your heart! Your wealth is a trust from Allah, and you will leave it behind one day—so why not send it ahead of you as a treasure in Paradise? Do not wait for a "better time" to give; the best time is now, in every moment you are alive and able. Spend in the cause of Allah—help the poor, support the needy, spread goodness—and know that your Lord sees every penny you give, and He never lets a single good deed go to waste. The doors of generosity are open to you today; do not close them upon yourself. Be among those who race toward His pleasure, and you will find His reward beyond your imagination.
