Surah Al-Mujadilah — Verse 11

• Tafassaḥū (تَفَسَّحُوا): Make room, expand, and widen the space for others.
• Unshuzū (انشُزُوا): Rise up, stand up, or move from your place (when asked to do so for a beneficial purpose).
• Darajāt (دَرَجَاتٍ): Multiple high ranks, degrees of honor and elevation.

Tafsir (Explanation):

O you who have truly believed in Allah and His Messenger and who act upon His commands! When you are asked to make room in gatherings — whether in the Prophet’s ﷺ assembly or any gathering of goodness — then do so generously and willingly. For when you expand space for your brothers and sisters, Allah expands for you in this world and in the Hereafter, granting you vastness in provision, hearts, and ultimately in Paradise itself.

And when you are asked to rise up — to stand or move from your place so that others of greater merit may sit, or to rise for any matter of benefit such as prayer, battle, or helping others — then rise without hesitation or resentment. In doing so, Allah elevates the ranks of the true believers among you who obey His commands with sincerity, and He raises those who have been given knowledge to even greater heights — degrees upon degrees of honor, reward, and closeness to Him. This is a magnificent distinction for the people of knowledge, for they combine learning with action and guide others toward what is good.

Indeed, Allah is fully Aware of all that you do — nothing escapes His knowledge, whether it is your obedience in making room, your rising when asked, or your hearts’ intentions in doing so. He will reward you perfectly for every deed, the small and the great alike.

This verse carries a beautiful lesson for every Muslim: humility, mutual respect, and honoring those who carry knowledge. When you give space to others in this world, Allah gives you space in the Hereafter. When you honor the scholars and the people of virtue, Allah honors you with elevation in His sight. Let this be a reminder that true nobility is not in pushing forward, but in making room for others; not in clinging to positions, but in rising for what pleases Allah. And know that your Lord sees every act of courtesy and every gesture of respect — so never underestimate the value of a kind, obedient heart.
