Explanation of the Verse:
O you who have truly believed in Allah and His Messenger and who strive to live by His guidance! When you wish to speak privately with the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) — sharing a secret, seeking counsel, or asking a personal question — then before that private conversation, offer a charity (sadaqah) to those in need. This act of giving is far better for you, for it carries immense reward from Allah and purifies your hearts and souls from the stains of sin and selfishness. It elevates your rank and cleanses your intentions.
However, if you do not find the means to give charity — whether due to poverty or lack of resources — then there is no blame or sin upon you. Allah, in His infinite mercy, does not burden a soul beyond its capacity. He is Ever-Forgiving to His believing servants, pardoning their shortcomings, and Most Merciful to them, granting them ease and flexibility in matters of worship.
This verse beautifully demonstrates how Islam trains its followers to value the Prophet (peace be upon him) and to approach even the smallest interactions with sincerity and sacrifice. When this command was revealed, the wealthy companions refrained from asking questions out of stinginess, and the poor refrained due to their inability to give. So Allah, in His compassion, lightened the matter and permitted private consultation without charity for those who could not afford it.
Dear believer, see how your Lord opens doors of goodness for you at every turn! He does not want hardship for you; rather, He wants to purify you, elevate you, and complete His favor upon you. When you give for His sake, even a small amount, He multiplies it manifold and cleanses your heart. And when you are unable, His mercy embraces you, and His forgiveness covers you. What a generous Lord, and what an easy path to His pleasure! Let this verse inspire you to be generous when you can, and to never despair of Allah's mercy when you cannot — for His door is always open to those who turn to Him.
