Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- أَشْفَقْتُمْ (Did you fear): Did you feel apprehension or dread?
- نَجْوَاكُمْ (Your private consultation): Your confidential conversation with the Prophet (peace be upon him).
- صَدَقَاتٍ (Charities): Voluntary alms given to the poor before the private consultation.
- تَابَ اللهُ عَلَيْكُمْ (Allah has turned to you in mercy): He has pardoned you and relieved you of this obligation.
Tafsir (Explanation):
O believers, did you fear poverty when you were commanded to give charity before your private consultations with the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him)? This command was a test of your sincerity and willingness to sacrifice for the sake of Allah. When you did not comply with this instruction, Allah, in His infinite mercy and kindness, forgave you and lifted this requirement from you, granting you ease instead of hardship.
Now, after this divine concession, remain steadfast upon the obligations that are always required of you: establish the prayer perfectly and consistently, pay the obligatory Zakat (poor-due) from your wealth, and obey Allah and His Messenger in all matters of life—whether in times of ease or difficulty. This obedience is the expiation for your shortcomings and the path to His pleasure. And Allah is fully aware of all your deeds, both outward and inward; nothing escapes His knowledge, and He will reward you accordingly for every action, whether good or bad.
A Call to the Believers:
How beautiful is the mercy of Allah! He does not burden a soul beyond its capacity, and when He tests you with a command, He also provides relief when you falter—so long as you turn back to Him in sincerity. This verse teaches us that Allah desires ease for you, not hardship. So never despair of His mercy, and never let the fear of worldly loss prevent you from drawing near to Him. The true believer is one who rushes to obedience, knowing that whatever he spends for Allah’s sake is never a loss but a gain that multiplies in this life and the Hereafter. Let this verse inspire you to be generous, to prioritize your relationship with Allah, and to trust that He who provides for all creation will never abandon those who strive in His path. Indeed, Allah is Ever-Aware of your efforts, and He never lets the reward of the doers of good go to waste.
