Translation — Tafsir
Key Words and Phrases:
- Tawallaw (تَوَلَّوْا): Took as allies, befriended, or aligned themselves with.
- Qawman ghadiba Allahu 'alayhim (قَوْمًا غَضِبَ اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِم): A people upon whom Allah's wrath has fallen—referring to the Jews who rejected the truth and persisted in disobedience.
- Ma hum minkum wa la minhum (مَّا هُم مِّنكُمْ وَلَا مِنْهُمْ): They are neither of you (the believers) nor of them (the Jews)—a state of being completely detached and confused, belonging to no group.
- Yahlifuna 'ala al-kadhib (وَيَحْلِفُونَ عَلَى الْكَذِبِ): They swear false oaths, asserting something they know to be untrue.
Tafsir (Explanation):
O Messenger, have you not observed those hypocrites who have taken as their allies and confidants a people upon whom Allah has sent His wrath—the Jews? These hypocrites are utterly lost and disconnected: they are not truly with you, O believers, in faith or loyalty, nor are they with the Jews in religion or allegiance. They are tossed between two camps, belonging to neither. And to cover up their betrayal, they swear solemn oaths—claiming they are Muslims, claiming they are loyal to you, claiming they never leaked the secrets of the believers to their enemies—all while knowing full well that their words are nothing but lies. Their hearts are aware of their deception, yet they persist in it, thinking they can deceive Allah Himself.
This verse exposes the reality of hypocrisy: it is not merely a difference of opinion, but a deep-rooted illness of the heart that leads a person to ally with the enemies of Allah while pretending to be among His friends. The hypocrites are warned here that their double game is seen, and that Allah is fully aware of their inner treachery.
A Da'wah Reflection:
How beautiful and pure is the path of sincerity! The believer is called to be clear and honest—honest with Allah, honest with oneself, and honest with others. This verse invites us to examine our own hearts: Do we truly stand with Allah and His Messenger, or are we swayed by the approval of those who oppose His way? The hypocrite swears falsely to hide his inner corruption, but the believer finds peace in truthfulness, for Allah loves the truthful and guides them to the best of outcomes. Let this be a moment of self-accounting: purify your allegiance, make it solely for Allah, and you will never be torn between two sides. For the one who is with Allah is never alone, and the one who is truthful is never lost.
