And [also for] those who were settled in al-Madinah and [adopted] the faith before them. Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Tabawwa'u al-dar — settled in the abode (i.e., Madinah) and made it their home.
  • Al-Iman — and they combined settlement with sincere faith.
  • Hajah — here it means resentment, envy, or ill-feeling in the heart.
  • Yu'thirun — they give preference to others over themselves.
  • Khasasah — need, poverty, or scarcity of provision.
  • Shuhh — miserliness, greed, and excessive attachment to wealth; it is the worst form of stinginess.

Tafsir (Explanation):

This noble verse paints a radiant portrait of the Ansar — the blessed inhabitants of Madinah who embraced Islam and prepared a home for the Prophet (peace be upon him) and his companions before the migration from Makkah. They are described with qualities that shine like stars in the sky of Islamic history, and their example remains a living lesson for every believer until the Day of Judgment.

The verse tells us that these Ansar loved the Muhajirun — those who left their homes and wealth for the sake of Allah — with a genuine, heartfelt love. They did not merely tolerate them; they cherished them as brothers. When the Prophet distributed the spoils of Banu al-Nadir among the Muhajirun because of their pressing need, the Ansar felt no jealousy or resentment in their hearts. They were not grieved that others received while they did not, for their hearts were pure and free from the disease of envy.

Even more remarkable is their spirit of self-sacrifice (ithar). They would give their Muhajir brothers preference over themselves in worldly matters — sharing their homes, their wealth, their provisions — even when they themselves were in dire need. They would offer their guest food while they went hungry, give them shelter while they themselves slept in the open, and present them with their best possessions while keeping the least for themselves. This is the peak of noble character, a generosity that transcends the natural love of self.

Then the verse concludes with a universal principle and a key to success: "And whoever is protected from the stinginess of his own soul — it is those who are the successful ones." This is not limited to the Ansar; it is an open invitation to every believer. The one who purifies their heart from greed and miserliness, who gives freely for the sake of Allah, and who prefers others over themselves — such a person has truly attained success in this life and the next. They have freed themselves from the chains of materialism and have tasted the sweetness of true faith.

A Da'wah Reflection:

Dear reader, look at this magnificent example and ask yourself: can we carry even a fraction of this spirit in our hearts today? The Ansar teach us that true faith is not merely words on the tongue but a transformation of the heart. When love for your brother outweighs love for your own comfort, when giving brings more joy than receiving, when you feel happiness for others' blessings without a trace of envy — then you have understood the essence of Islam.

This verse is an invitation to purify our souls from the disease of greed and to open our hearts to generosity and brotherhood. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "None of you truly believes until he loves for his brother what he loves for himself." The Ansar lived this teaching in its most perfect form.

Let us strive to emulate them — in our families, our communities, and our societies. Let us give without expecting, love without condition, and prefer others over ourselves when they are in need. This is the path to true success, the success that Allah promises to those who are protected from the stinginess of their own souls. May Allah make us among them.

📜 Verse 7-11 — Al-Hashr

And what Allah restored to His Messenger from the people of the towns - it is for Allah and for the Messenger and for [his] near relatives and orphans and the [stranded] traveler - so that it will not be a perpetual distribution among the rich from among you. And whatever the Messenger has given you - take; and what he has forbidden you - refrain from. And fear Allah; indeed, Allah is severe in penalty.
For the poor emigrants who were expelled from their homes and their properties, seeking bounty from Allah and [His] approval and supporting Allah and His Messenger, [there is also a share]. Those are the truthful.
And [also for] those who were settled in al-Madinah and [adopted] the faith before them. They love those who emigrated to them and find not any want in their breasts of what the emigrants were given but give [them] preference over themselves, even though they are in privation. And whoever is protected from the stinginess of his soul - it is those who will be the successful.
And [there is a share for] those who came after them, saying, "Our Lord, forgive us and our brothers who preceded us in faith and put not in our hearts [any] resentment toward those who have believed. Our Lord, indeed You are Kind and Merciful."
Have you not considered those who practice hypocrisy, saying to their brothers who have disbelieved among the People of the Scripture, "If you are expelled, we will surely leave with you, and we will not obey, in regard to you, anyone - ever; and if you are fought, we will surely aid you." But Allah testifies that they are liars.
