📖 English Meaning
And when a sign comes to them, they say, "Never will we believe until we are given like that which was given to the messengers of Allah." Allah is most knowing of where He places His message. There will afflict those who committed crimes debasement before Allah and severe punishment for what they used to conspire.

Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Āyah (آيَةٌ): A sign, miracle, or clear proof.
  • Ṣaghār (صَغَارٌ): Utmost humiliation, disgrace, and abasement.
  • Yamkurūn (يَمْكُرُونَ): They plot, scheme, or devise cunning plans (against the truth).

Tafsir (Explanation):

When a clear sign or miracle from Allah came to the disbelieving leaders of Makkah—proving the truth of Prophet Muhammad’s message (peace be upon him)—they arrogantly rejected it and said: "We will never believe until we are given the very same thing that Allah’s messengers were given." They demanded prophethood itself, or miracles of their own choosing, as if they had the right to dictate how Allah should send His guidance. Some of them even said, "If prophethood were true, we would be more deserving of it than Muhammad—for we are wealthier and of higher status."

Allah responded to their foolish demand with a decisive and wise reply: "Allah knows best where to place His message." This means that Allah, in His infinite wisdom and perfect knowledge, chooses for His divine mission only those whom He knows to be truly worthy—those with pure hearts, steadfast character, and the ability to carry the heavy trust of prophethood. It is not a matter of wealth, lineage, or social rank; it is a matter of divine selection based on what Allah knows about His creation. No one can demand it, and no one can question His choice.

Then comes a stern warning and a promise of justice: "Disgrace from Allah will befall the criminals, and a severe punishment awaits them because of their plotting." Those who rejected the truth out of arrogance and schemed against Islam and its followers will not escape the consequences. In this world, they will taste humiliation and defeat, and in the Hereafter, they will face an agonizing torment in Hellfire—all because of their cunning plots and persistent efforts to extinguish the light of Allah’s guidance.

A Call to Reflection:

This verse carries a profound lesson for every soul. It reminds us that Allah’s wisdom is beyond our limited understanding. He does not choose His messengers or His favored servants based on worldly measures—wealth, power, or status—but rather based on piety, sincerity, and readiness to serve His cause. So instead of questioning Allah’s decisions or demanding things beyond our station, we should humble ourselves before His will and strive to be among those whom He loves through obedience and devotion.

And what a beautiful promise lies in this verse for the believers! If we submit to Allah’s choice, accept His messengers with gratitude, and avoid the arrogance of the disbelievers, we open the door to His mercy and protection. Let us not be like those who demanded signs while the truth was already before them. The greatest sign is the Qur’an itself—a living miracle that continues to guide humanity. Will we not open our hearts to it? Will we not be among those who accept the truth with humility and sincerity, saving ourselves from disgrace in this life and severe punishment in the next? Indeed, the path of faith is the path of honor, and the path of arrogance is the path of ruin. Choose wisely, for Allah’s promise is true.

📜 Verse 122-126 — Al-An'am

And is one who was dead and We gave him life and made for him light by which to walk among the people like one who is in darkness, never to emerge therefrom? Thus it has been made pleasing to the disbelievers that which they were doing.
And thus We have placed within every city the greatest of its criminals to conspire therein. But they conspire not except against themselves, and they perceive [it] not.
And when a sign comes to them, they say, "Never will we believe until we are given like that which was given to the messengers of Allah." Allah is most knowing of where He places His message. There will afflict those who committed crimes debasement before Allah and severe punishment for what they used to conspire.
So whoever Allah wants to guide - He expands his breast to [contain] Islam; and whoever He wants to misguide - He makes his breast tight and constricted as though he were climbing into the sky. Thus does Allah place defilement upon those who do not believe.
And this is the path of your Lord, [leading] straight. We have detailed the verses for a people who remember.
