📖 English Meaning
So whoever Allah wants to guide - He expands his breast to [contain] Islam; and whoever He wants to misguide - He makes his breast tight and constricted as though he were climbing into the sky. Thus does Allah place defilement upon those who do not believe.

Key Words and Meanings:

  • Yashraḥ Ṣadrah (يَشْرَحْ صَدْرَهُ): To expand or open the chest, meaning to illuminate the heart and make it receptive.
  • Ḥarajan (حَرَجًا): Extreme tightness and constriction, to the point where nothing can enter.
  • Yaṣṣaʿʿadu (يَصَّعَّدُ): To ascend or climb up with great difficulty.
  • Rijs (الرِّجْسَ): Literally, filth or foulness; here, it means punishment and disgrace.

Explanation of the Verse:

This verse draws a profound and vivid picture of how Allah deals with hearts based on their choice of guidance or rejection of truth. When Allah wills to guide a person—because that person has shown sincerity and a desire for truth—He expands their chest for Islam. This expansion is not merely physical; it is a spiritual opening where the heart becomes wide, peaceful, and receptive to faith, worship, and submission to Allah. Such a person finds Islam easy and natural, like breathing fresh air, and their soul delights in obedience.

On the other hand, when Allah wills to lead someone astray—because they have persistently turned away from truth and chosen falsehood—He makes their chest tight and severely constricted, as if it were locked shut. The verse compares this state to someone trying to ascend into the sky: just as climbing higher becomes increasingly difficult and suffocating due to the thinning air, so too does the heart of the disbeliever find faith and guidance utterly unbearable and suffocating. Truth cannot penetrate such a heart, and every call to goodness feels heavy and oppressive.

This is how Allah deals with those who refuse to believe: He places upon them *rijs*—a punishment and spiritual defilement that distances them further from mercy. This is both a consequence of their own choices and a divine justice that is perfectly wise and fair. Allah does not wrong anyone; rather, people wrong themselves by hardening their hearts against the light of truth.

Da'wah Reflection:

Dear reader, this verse is a powerful reminder of the beauty and ease of faith. When you open your heart to Allah, even a little, He expands it with peace, purpose, and contentment that no worldly pleasure can match. Islam is not a burden—it is a release. It is the key that unlocks the chains of confusion, anxiety, and despair. So do not let your heart become tight by turning away from the truth. Seek Allah sincerely, and He will make the path of guidance smooth for you, filling your life with light and tranquility. And if you ever feel that your heart is hard, know that it is never too late to turn back—Allah’s mercy is vast, and He loves those who return to Him with a humble and open heart.

📜 Verse 123-127 — Al-An'am

And thus We have placed within every city the greatest of its criminals to conspire therein. But they conspire not except against themselves, and they perceive [it] not.
And when a sign comes to them, they say, "Never will we believe until we are given like that which was given to the messengers of Allah." Allah is most knowing of where He places His message. There will afflict those who committed crimes debasement before Allah and severe punishment for what they used to conspire.
So whoever Allah wants to guide - He expands his breast to [contain] Islam; and whoever He wants to misguide - He makes his breast tight and constricted as though he were climbing into the sky. Thus does Allah place defilement upon those who do not believe.
And this is the path of your Lord, [leading] straight. We have detailed the verses for a people who remember.
For them will be the Home of Peace with their Lord. And He will be their protecting friend because of what they used to do.
