Key Words and Their Meanings:
- Al-Mawt (الْمَوْتُ): Death — the inevitable end of every soul in this worldly life.
- Tafirrūn (تَفِرُّونَ): You flee from — indicating running away or avoiding, here referring to the wish to escape death or the fear of facing it.
- Mulāqīkum (مُلَاقِيكُمْ): Will meet you — meaning it will inevitably catch up with you; there is no escape from it.
- Ālim al-Ghayb wa al-Shahādah (عَالِمِ الْغَيْبِ وَالشَّهَادَةِ): The Knower of the unseen and the witnessed — Allah, who knows all that is hidden from creation and all that is visible and apparent.
- Fa yunabbi’ukum (فَيُنَبِّئُكُمْ): Then He will inform you — meaning He will tell you the full truth about your deeds and call you to account for them.
Explanation of the Verse:
O Prophet, say to those who flee from death — whether out of fear, arrogance, or a false sense of security in their worldly lives — that death is not something they can outrun. It is certain and will meet them no matter how they try to avoid it, whether through strength, wealth, or hiding in fortified places. Their appointed time is fixed, and when it comes, nothing can delay or prevent it.
Then, after death, they will be returned to Allah — the One who knows every hidden secret and every open action, nothing escapes His knowledge. He will resurrect them on the Day of Judgment and inform them of everything they did in this life, whether good or evil, small or great. He will then recompense them with perfect justice: reward for the righteous and punishment for the wicked.
This verse is a powerful reminder that no one can escape the reality of death, and that life after death is certain. It calls upon every soul to reflect: if death is unavoidable, then what truly matters is how we prepare for what comes after it. The One who knows all — the unseen and the witnessed — will hold us accountable, so let us fill our days with deeds that will bring us honor on that Day, and turn to Allah in sincere repentance before the inevitable meeting arrives.
