Key Words and Their Meanings:

  • "Yatamannawnahu" (يتمنونه): They wish for it or desire it—referring here to death.
  • "Abadan" (أبدًا): Ever, at any time, forever.
  • "Bima qaddamat aydihim" (بما قدمت أيديهم): Because of what their hands have sent forth—meaning the deeds they have committed, whether good or evil.
  • "Al-Zalimin" (الظالمين): The wrongdoers, those who transgress against themselves and others by committing injustice and sin.

Explanation of the Verse:

This verse continues the discourse about the Jews who were challenged to wish for death if they truly believed they were Allah’s exclusive allies and the only ones destined for Paradise. Yet, they never wish for death—not even once—and they never will. Why? Because they know, deep within themselves, the truth of their false claims. Their hearts carry the weight of what their hands have sent forth: disbelief in Allah, rejection of His messengers, distortion of His scriptures, and a long history of transgression and corruption. They are fully aware that if they were to face their Lord now, they would meet a reckoning they cannot bear. So they cling to this worldly life, preferring its fleeting pleasures over the eternal reality of the Hereafter, out of fear of the punishment their deeds have earned them.

And Allah—glorious is His knowledge—is fully aware of the wrongdoers. Nothing they conceal in their hearts or reveal in their actions is hidden from Him. He knows the extent of their injustice, their deception, and their rebellion, and He will certainly bring them to account for it all. His justice is perfect, and His knowledge encompasses every detail, leaving no escape for those who persist in wrongdoing.

A Call to Reflection and Faith:

This verse carries a profound lesson for every believer. It reminds us that our deeds are not forgotten—they are recorded, and they will either be a source of peace or a source of regret. The Jews of that time feared death because their hands had sent forth evil; imagine the tranquility of a believer who has sent forth good deeds, charity, repentance, and sincere worship. Such a soul does not dread meeting Allah; rather, it longs for that meeting with hope and love. Let this verse inspire you to examine your own life: what have your hands sent forth today? Are you building a legacy that will make you eager to meet your Lord, or are you accumulating burdens that will make you fear that meeting? Allah is ever watchful, ever merciful—so turn to Him in repentance before the inevitable hour arrives, and let your deeds be a light for you in the darkness of the grave. For He who knows all things is also He who forgives all things to those who sincerely return to Him.

📜 Verse 5-9 — Al-Jumu'ah

The example of those who were entrusted with the Torah and then did not take it on is like that of a donkey who carries volumes [of books]. Wretched is the example of the people who deny the signs of Allah. And Allah does not guide the wrongdoing people.
Say, "O you who are Jews, if you claim that you are allies of Allah, excluding the [other] people, then wish for death, if you should be truthful."
But they will not wish for it, ever, because of what their hands have put forth. And Allah is Knowing of the wrongdoers.
Say, "Indeed, the death from which you flee - indeed, it will meet you. Then you will be returned to the Knower of the unseen and the witnessed, and He will inform you about what you used to do."
O you who have believed, when [the adhan] is called for the prayer on the day of Jumu'ah [Friday], then proceed to the remembrance of Allah and leave trade. That is better for you, if you only knew.
