Translation — Tafsir
Key Words and Their Meanings:
- "Nūdiya" (نُودِيَ): The call (Adhan) is made.
- "Fas'aw" (فَاسْعَوْا): Proceed with intention, earnestness, and haste — not necessarily running, but moving purposefully.
- "Dhikr Allah" (ذِكْرِ اللَّهِ): The remembrance of Allah, specifically referring here to the Friday sermon (Khutbah) and the congregational prayer.
- "Dharū al-Bay'" (ذَرُوا الْبَيْعَ): Abandon and leave off all trade and transactions (buying and selling).
Explanation of the Verse:
O you who have truly believed in Allah and His Messenger and who strive to live by His guidance! When the call to prayer is proclaimed on the day of Jumu'ah (Friday) — after the Imam has ascended the pulpit — then hasten with sincere intention and due seriousness to the remembrance of Allah, which is the sermon and the obligatory congregational prayer. And immediately cease all worldly transactions, whether buying or selling, and everything else that might distract you from this great act of worship. This command — to leave your trade and rush to the prayer — is far better for you than any worldly profit, for it brings the forgiveness of your sins, immense reward from your Lord, and success in this life and the Hereafter. If you truly knew the wisdom and blessings behind this command, you would never hesitate to obey it.
A Call to Reflection and Action:
Dear believer, reflect on the immense mercy of your Creator in this verse. He does not ask you to abandon your livelihood entirely — rather, He simply pauses your worldly engagements for a brief, blessed moment each week to reconnect with Him. This is a divine invitation to purify your heart, renew your faith, and strengthen your bond with your fellow Muslims in the congregational prayer. The temporary loss of a few sales or transactions is nothing compared to the eternal gain you secure: the pleasure of Allah, the light of guidance in your heart, and the peace that descends upon those who answer His call. When you hear the Adhan on Friday, let your heart leap with joy — for it is an opportunity to reset your spiritual compass and draw closer to the One who has given you everything. Respond to His call with love and eagerness, and you will find that He never lets your obedience go unrewarded, both in this world and in the everlasting Hereafter.
