Word Meanings:

  • Fitnah (فتنة): Trial, test, or tribulation — something that puts a person's faith and obedience to Allah to the test.
  • Ajrun ʿAẓīm (أجر عظيم): A magnificent and immense reward, far beyond anything worldly.

Explanation of the Verse:

O servants of Allah, listen carefully to this profound truth: your wealth and your children are not merely blessings to be enjoyed — they are a trial and a test from Allah. They are a means by which your true character and faith are revealed. Wealth can tempt you toward greed, stinginess, or earning through unlawful means. Children can distract you from your obligations to Allah, or even push you toward disobedience when you prioritize their desires over His commands. This is the nature of this worldly life — even the dearest things to your heart can become a snare if you let them take precedence over your Lord.

Yet in the very same breath, Allah gives you the most hopeful news: "And Allah — with Him is a magnificent reward." This means that if you choose obedience to Allah over the demands of your wealth and children, if you give your wealth its due right (through charity, zakat, and spending in good causes), and if you raise your children upon righteousness while not letting them turn you away from your faith — then Allah has prepared for you a reward that no eye has seen, no ear has heard, and no human heart can imagine. That reward is nothing less than Paradise, the eternal bliss that never fades.

So do not let the temporary pleasures of this world deceive you. Your wealth will one day be gone, and your children will one day leave you — but the reward of Allah is everlasting. When you stand before your Lord on the Day of Judgment, you will realize that every sacrifice you made for His sake was worth infinitely more than anything you held onto in this world.

A Call to Reflection:

Dear believer, look at your own life. How often do you postpone your prayers because of work? How often do you neglect your Islamic duties because of family commitments? How often does the love of money make you hesitant to give charity? This verse is a gentle yet firm reminder: these are your tests. Pass them, and you will find treasures beyond measure. Fail them, and you may lose what truly matters.

The Prophet ﷺ said: "Every nation has a trial, and the trial of my nation is wealth." (Reported by At-Tirmidhi). So be among those who pass the test — those who use their wealth and children as means to draw closer to Allah, not as barriers that distance them from Him. The door of Allah's mercy is wide open, and His reward is greater than anything you could ever lose in this world. Seek His pleasure, and you will find that He gives you far more than you ever gave up for His sake.

📜 Verse 13-17 — At-Taghabun

Allah - there is no deity except Him. And upon Allah let the believers rely.
O you who have believed, indeed, among your wives and your children are enemies to you, so beware of them. But if you pardon and overlook and forgive - then indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.
Your wealth and your children are but a trial, and Allah has with Him a great reward.
So fear Allah as much as you are able and listen and obey and spend [in the way of Allah]; it is better for your selves. And whoever is protected from the stinginess of his soul - it is those who will be the successful.
If you loan Allah a goodly loan, He will multiply it for you and forgive you. And Allah is Most Appreciative and Forbearing.
