Key Words and Their Meanings:

  • Azwājukum (أَزْوَاجِكُمْ): Your spouses (husbands and wives).
  • ʿAdūwwan (عَدُوًّا): An enemy — someone who causes harm or leads you away from what is right.
  • Faḥdharūhum (فَاحْذَرُوهُمْ): So be cautious and on guard against them.
  • Taʿfū (تَعْفُوا): You pardon or overlook a fault.
  • Taṣfaḥū (تَصْفَحُوا): You turn away from the offense and let it go without blame.
  • Taghfirū (تَغْفِرُوا): You forgive and cover the sin completely.

Explanation of the Verse:

O you who have sincerely believed in Allah and His Messenger, know that among your spouses and your children there may be those who act as enemies to you — not necessarily in the sense of open hostility, but in the sense that they can distract you, hold you back, or even turn you away from the path of Allah. They may discourage you from fulfilling your religious duties, such as prayer, charity, seeking knowledge, or striving in the cause of Allah. A wife might beg her husband to stay home instead of going out for the sake of religion; a child might pull a parent away from worship or from doing good deeds. In this way, the very people you love most can become a trial and a source of harm to your faith.

Therefore, be on your guard against them. Do not blindly obey them when they push you toward neglecting your obligations to Allah. Love them, care for them, but never let that love override your duty to your Creator. Your ultimate loyalty belongs to Allah, and no human relationship — no matter how dear — should ever come before His commands.

However, if your spouse or children have wronged you or caused you difficulty, and you choose to pardon their mistakes, to turn away from their faults without reproach, and to forgive them completely, then know that Allah — the Most Forgiving, the Most Merciful — will treat you with the same kindness. He will forgive your own sins and shower you with His mercy. Indeed, the reward you give is the reward you receive: if you show forgiveness to others, Allah will show forgiveness to you.

This verse was revealed in a context where some believers were prevented by their families from migrating for the sake of their faith. When they later saw their brothers in faith who had migrated and gained deeper understanding of the religion, they felt anger toward their families and wanted to punish them. Allah gently reminded them: if you forgive and overlook, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful — for the one who pardons others deserves to be pardoned by his Lord.

A Call to Reflection:

Dear believer, this verse is a beautiful reminder that your family is both a blessing and a test. They are a blessing when they support you in goodness, and a test when they pull you away from it. The key is balance: love them deeply, but never let that love weaken your commitment to Allah. And when they err, do not respond with harshness or revenge. Instead, respond with patience, pardon, and forgiveness — for this is the character of the righteous, and it is the path that leads to Allah's own forgiveness and mercy. How generous is our Lord, that He promises to forgive us when we forgive others! So be quick to pardon, slow to anger, and firm in your faith — and you will find Allah's mercy embracing you from every side.

📜 Verse 12-16 — At-Taghabun

And obey Allah and obey the Messenger; but if you turn away - then upon Our Messenger is only [the duty of] clear notification.
Allah - there is no deity except Him. And upon Allah let the believers rely.
O you who have believed, indeed, among your wives and your children are enemies to you, so beware of them. But if you pardon and overlook and forgive - then indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.
Your wealth and your children are but a trial, and Allah has with Him a great reward.
So fear Allah as much as you are able and listen and obey and spend [in the way of Allah]; it is better for your selves. And whoever is protected from the stinginess of his soul - it is those who will be the successful.
