The Interpretation:
Recall, O Prophet, the moment when you confided a private matter to one of your wives — Hafsah, may Allah be pleased with her. You had asked her to keep this secret, which concerned a personal family matter. However, she disclosed this confidence to her fellow wife, Aishah, may Allah be pleased with her. When Allah, by His divine will, informed you of this breach of trust, you confronted Hafsah with grace and wisdom: you revealed to her part of what she had disclosed, showing her that you knew of her action, yet you graciously withheld mentioning the rest out of kindness and magnanimity, not wishing to embarrass her further.
When you informed her of what she had done, she asked in astonishment, "Who told you this?" — seeking to understand how this secret could have reached you. You replied with a response that carries profound faith and certainty: "The All-Knowing, the All-Aware has informed me." This answer redirects the focus from human sources to the divine source of all knowledge — Allah, who knows every secret, every whisper, and every hidden intention.
A Call to Reflection and Faith:
This noble verse teaches us several timeless lessons. First, it highlights the sanctity of trust and confidentiality in human relationships — even within the closest bonds, a secret entrusted must be honored. The Prophet ﷺ, despite his lofty status, was a human being with personal matters, and this verse shows his beautiful character in handling a delicate situation with patience, wisdom, and forgiveness rather than harshness or public exposure.
Second, it reminds us that Allah is ever watchful over all affairs. Nothing escapes His knowledge — not a word spoken in private, not a secret shared in confidence. This should instill in us a profound sense of accountability and mindfulness. When we realize that the All-Knowing, the All-Aware is always present, we become more careful in our words and more sincere in our actions.
Third, the Prophet's gentle approach in addressing the matter — informing only part and overlooking the rest — is a beautiful model of forgiveness and tact. How often do we, in our daily lives, have the opportunity to expose others' faults but choose instead to cover them with kindness? The Prophet ﷺ teaches us that true nobility lies not in exposing and humiliating, but in forgiving and moving forward with grace.
Finally, this verse draws us closer to Allah by reminding us of His perfect attributes. He is Al-'Aleem — the One whose knowledge has no limits, and Al-Khabeer — the One who is fully aware of the finest details of all matters. When we internalize this, our hearts find peace, for we know that even when secrets are betrayed and trusts are broken, Allah is our ultimate guardian and protector. Turn to Him in all your affairs, confide in Him in your prayers, and trust that He, the All-Knowing and All-Aware, will guide you through every trial with wisdom and mercy.
